Thread: New OC'er E8500 questions

    Default New OC'er E8500 questions

Ok I'm putting the following together next month but need help figuring RAM out. I've read a few threads here so far and seem to have a general grasp but some clarification wouldn't hurt:

    Core2 Duo 3.16 (E8500)
    Asus P5Q3 mobo
    geForce GTX 285
4 1gb sticks of DDR3, not sure what speed to buy
    Scythe infinity HSF

Now, the plan is to run the CPU around 4.2ghz which I guess will require a 442mhz FSB? stock it runs at 333mhz? 9.5 multiplied by 442 = 4200 I believe.

So anyway, far as I am understanding right now RAM is advertised at 'effective' speed, but actual operational speed is half? So DDR3 1600 is really running at 800mhz FSB speed?

If that's the case, then with a 442mhz FSB, I'd want RAM that can do at least 900mhz right? Or am I not understanding RAM multipliers?

Also, I'll want to set everything up manually to keep the PCI-E bus at 100mhz, correct?

Just want to make sure I get all the right parts beforehand so this build comes together properly.

    Thanks in advance guys

You are right in saying you should set up the PCI-E Bus manually to 100mhz or so, there is talk that when running high FSB like over 500 got to 102mhz PCI-E I have mine set to 102mhz with 400Mhz FSB and everything works sweet. I have 800Mhz Ram and have the FSB at 400Mhz and because is DDR2 (double data rate) it runs @ a 1:1 ratio with my fsb. As for what ram you should by its up to you. From what I have read its not entirely worth spending super cash of the fastest ram ever invented because the performance gain isnt super noticable, but you dont want to leave yourself short. There are a few ram threads on this forum that may explain timings better, I dont know much about DDR3 so ill leave someone else to comment.

    Any other pointers/clarification guys?

I went ahead and ordered the P5Q3 mobo and some DDR3-1600 OCZ ram that was on the compatibility chart for it.

Decided that 3.8gHz would be plenty satisfying.

Also, I got a Xigmatek cooler on recommendation of a friend instead of the Scythe one (found alot of bad reviews of the Scythe Ninja HSF being warped etc).

Should be getting the CPU and gfx card in about 2 more weeks!
