Yeah Id do the same, When you raise volts the heat also goes up. Things become unstable when an overclocked system is unstable. The Display Driver is usually one of the first things to go. I cant say ive hurd of the VPU issue before.

Yes, I guess I've hit the sweet spot with CPU and RAM, its not like my 4850 is old, as you know It's a great card, I think its the smaller brother to a underclocked 4870 but with slower DDR memory. VPU reseting from what I've read seems to come about from various circumstances:

    1. Overclocking
    2. Heat
    3. Changes in frequency
    4. Driver problems
    5. Graphics card is old
    6. Not enough power or too much.

But I tested it on Crysis and Call of duty 5 both extensive in terms of graphics complexity both fail, it even fails on Virtual tennis 3 !!
Just wonder Nimrod that the higher frequency or overclock (3.5Ghz from 3.31Ghz) indirecty increases GPU frequency, even though the PCI-E is set to 100mhz. Odd , but no doubt easy to adjust lol

Yeah It gets pretty technical when you get down to the nitty gritty of it all. As Ive said an unstable overclock will effect graphics driver stability which is causeing you the error. I bet, that with some advanced tweaking you could probably get your system stable @ 3.5 with no Problems, but at the cost of volts and heat. I think the extra proformance would outway the cost. And yes the 4850 is a kick ass card and I believe it does have the same chipset as the big brother 4870 but as you say slower clock speeds and what not. But On my system with the E8500 it runs Crysis, ArmA: Armed Assault, Fallout 3 and all that on full super max settings, abid @ only 1280X1024 (all that my 32in LCD will do) Direct X 10 and whatever above 60 Frames Per second. So Im pretty happy with that. Now when I say Above 60 Frames, for some unknown reason at this time FRAPS hits 60 Frames and walls out? Probably cause the Screens Refresh Rate is only 60ms? IDK. Im just waiting for the right Sony/samsung LCD TV FULL HD to come my way.

Sounds good, I can get Crysis to run at 25-30fps on 1650 x 1050 nearly maxed no AA ,16xAF although I use a tweaked config file to do this, essential as you know the game is slugglish in terms of optimization. You wait until you get yourself a monitor with 1650 x 1050 or 1920 x 1200 resolution (Btw I have a Samsung Syncmaster 205bw LCD 22inch)- believe me Crysis look even better with higher resolution. You can even crossfire your 4850, since both lanes use 16x brandwidth instead of 8x thats the great thing about the X48 chipset.

Back to your original point, yes I feel that your right, my E5200 can easily hit 3.5ghz but you got to know when to stop, I know some people always want more, they always ending buying technology they don't really need aka Quad processor. Believe me I'm not that rich lol

Out of interest Nimrod do you overclock your 4850hd? and if yes, what programme do you use - I use the catalyst tool (Overdrive)

Yes Cross Fire is on the cards and I know that higher res would be good. I "Borrowed" a dell 24in Monitor and nearly creamed myself with 1200X1080 res lol. I do not overclock my Card as such. I want to leave a little head room for when I get used to its speed. Plus I live in a HOT climate and my Computer already heats the room up enough. I run the fan on 37% fixed and it keeps it nice and cool. My HD4850 is only using the crappy reference cooler but the price was right (free) so Im not complaining. X48 Chipset is good. Have had no dramas and full 16X will be sick when I get another card oneday.

LOL best leave those higher resolutions for now. I live in England so as you imagine its much cooler, naturally more ideal for overclocking. I running my card at 60% - 100% is too loud, although again the difference between 37% to 60% isnt all that great, that is in terms of actual cooling. I take it your have the ATI reference board? I brought the revised sapphire hd4850 version - they have improved the cooling on it, or so they say. Talking of Oc How on earth can I increase the 700mhz gpu speed? any ideas, like I say I use the overdrive programme on the ATI control centre but I can only set it to a maximum of 700mhz whilst the other parameter can be set near 1200mhz (I have mine on 1080mhz at the moment).

Yeah mines just the ATI reference design Single cooling slot thing. Its good on 37% though.
