Default Problems with i7 980x overclock

Hi im new to the forums.

Recently i did the simple overclock a lot of people do on the i7 980x, changing the frequency multiplier from 25 to 30 and Vcore from 1.22 to 1.38 volts (1.35 was unstable) giving me roughly 4.14GHz instead of 3.33GHz.

I checked around and this is supposed to be easily manageable for a stock air cooled system with pretty much just the stock cpu fan set to performance.

Anyway it seemed very stable through 3D Mark and CoD: Black Ops, but then i checked the CPU's core temps while playing. The temps were normal during each game but at the start of each map the temps were spiking at late 90 to 101 degrees for about 1-2 seconds.

After seeing these temperature spikes i decided to put the CPU back to stock frequency and Vcore voltage.

I really want to run system 24/7 at 4.14GHz but i play a fair bit of Black Ops and dont have the $1000 to get new 980x.
Thanks for reading, any help would be greatly appreciated.

try with cpu voltage at 1.30000v set dram to 1.5 or 1.66v according to what ram you have(it will be printed on the ram module),set qpi/vtt to 1.315000

OK i tried the settings you mentioned and it's definately not stable, 3DMark CPU tests cause blue screen.

This happened before untill i raised Vcore to 1.38 volts which is probably too high.

I have oredered a Cooler Master V10 but i still don't understand why i need so much Vcore to get 4.13GHz, and cooling or not this voltage will probably reduce CPU life.

Nor the best cooler ever. A cheaper Cooler Master V8 or Zalman CNPS10X Performa would do better.
Better cooling may help reduce voltage.
What were the "normal" temps during gaming?

normal gaming temps were only 60-70, it was just at beginning of each map while loading in for a second or 2 it would hit 100c

you might need a better aftermarket cooler,i know the intel one is good spec but a good quality aftermarket one would perform better im sure, tried with 1.3v cpu and more qpi/vtt voltage? say 1.3v for cpu and 1.35v for qpi/vtt? could be not enough qpi/vtt that it failed before and lowering cpu voltage will help with temps

what thermal paste did you use? mx2 and tx2 are the best to use, better than arctic silver 5

thermalright ultra 120 and prolimatech megahalems are the best coolers imo,and they dont take up too much space

i'll give it one more shot with those settings then i guess i'll wait till i get cooler master v10 which ppl have been telling me not to get since i ordered it...apparently despite good reviews it sucks?

even in this thread someone said the V8 is better, how is that even possible that makes no sense at all.

you were right thank you :) my qpi/vtt wasn't high enough, it's very stable now and only in 50s/60s when gaming. map change spike is only 70 odd instead of 100 lol
i did have to use 1.35 Vcore though, but thats better than 1.38 and high temps. you think 1.35 vcore is too high?
