    Cool Re: Z77A-GD65 + i5 2500K Overclocking - How to start?

I've seen a fair number of users that passed IBT or LinX only to have Prime95 get errors, usually much sooner than your 9+ hour test.
I cringe when I see people running IBT or LinX for 20, 50, or 100 loops.
I should report them to the S.P.C.C. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Cpu's).

Start Prime95 and cancel or close the "Run a torture test window".
Click on the Options tab and see what you can select or change in the CPU and Preferences windows.
Click on the Advanced tab and see what you can set or select.
Make sure that Round off checking is selected with a check mark.
I don't know where the AVX option is in the current Prime95 version.
Let us know how the cpu core temperatures are with the AVX test enabled.

Definitely get your current 4.6GHz setup stable
so that you can use this as a fallback setting in case you have problems with a higher overclock.
You should be able to save multiple bios profiles, check your user manual for details.
In my systems, I have several saved, stable profiles along with several profiles with semi-stable bios settings.
Just be carefully that you don't overwrite or replace any saved profiles that you want to keep.

So you're gonna wimp out and stop at 4.8GHz
Go for the gusto and see if you can find stability with 5.0 or 5.2GHz
Maybe you can get closer to 5.5GHz by using Sin's LN2 tweaking suggestions.

Yeah I'll take your suggestions, definitely get 4.6 stable before moving on and update you guys. I have the option to save an Overclock profile, I'll definitely save 4.6 one it's stable and use it as a fallback point.

5.5 GHz on a 2500K?! That's hardcore! I seriously doubt I'll be able to do it on air! Maybe I'll go towards 5 if I can get 4.8 stable, but 5.5???? I would definitely need to pass the max Vcore setting of 1.4 which I'm not going to do.

    What's Sin's LN2 Tweaking? Liquid Nitrogen?

Well, I got home, upped the voltages:

    Vcore - 1.37
    S/A - 0.965
    I/O - 1.07
    PLL - 1.84 (Same)

Ran IBT 10 loops of maximum memory, passed with flying colors.
Then I downloaded P95 AVX and it gave me a BSOD after 10 minutes.

Went into the BIOS, raised Vcore to 1.38 (Droops to 1.36 in CPU-Z)
Also gave the DRAM little more juice toward 1.514

That made things worse and got a BSOD after 1 minute, the DRAM voltage was probably too high.
So I set the DRAM voltage back to 1.507 (Since Auto sets it a little below 1.5 which is the stock voltage) and kept Vcore at 1.38

Running Blend and so far I've passed one round of 448K AVX FFT test and now just started an 8K FFT which seems to be stable for the last 20 minutes, still a long way to go of course...

The AVX version of Prime is definitely harsher on the CPU, idle 25-33C, load 65-69C tops, however, the 2 BSODs are an indication that this test is serious...

Will keep updating, hopefully after blend passes at least 10 hours without issues.

    EDIT

Ok, well, Prime failed on a AVX 512K FFT and I got a BSOD, I assume that this is considered to be a large FFT, what should be my next move? I'm kinda clueless, the system passes 10 runs of IBT at maximum stress and fails a 512K FFT?

    What to do? :/

Yes its a large FFT, and also since it is AVX version thet doubles the memory access I'd lean toword I/O voltage.

Thanks, I red that the max I/O voltage for the i5 is 1.2V, however, they said that you don't have to get anywhere near this unless you are running your memory at around 2000mhz or more.

I'm running mine on 1600mhz and my current voltage is 1.07, how far should I go with this voltage and what's considered safe for 1600mhz speed?

You are not anywahere the danger zone, worry about it when you get ther, try increasing it one step at a time, up to 1.1v.

Thanks, I'll try again with I/O at 1.09 and update.

Why 1.9? Go by lowest increment.
