    I've got an MSI-KT3 ULTRA and a XP 1600+.

    Currently it is at 1.638GHz @ 1.85v. 156FSB.

I'm reading that most if not all 1600+'s reach the 1.9GHz area. So what the heck am I doing wrong? My system is very stable where it's at but there has got to be something holding me back.

I've got Samsung CAS 2.5 PC 2700 DDR. <--I think that's the problem.

Or maybe this: the 686B with the stock heatsink. no fan.

My proccessor runs around 35-38c at idle and 43-46c full load. so I'm pretty sure heat isn't the issue. For intake I have a 120CFM Sunon fan and for exhaust I have two Vantec Tornado @ 84CFM/each. This is system 2 on my sig and I am running Win2K-SP3.

    PSU is Enermax 300W

I've been thinking about getting 512MB GEIL PC3200 CAS2 w/ 5ns chips versus GEIL PC2700 CAS2 w/6ns chips would this aid in my want of reaching the 166MHz FSB or is there something limiting about the Motherboard?

The better memory would help (sorry but I've used neither preferrin' Corsair XMS and Kingmax memory). Don't worry about havin' no fan on the northbridge as the KT333 chipset doesn't suffer heat like previous versions and your temps are fine. Two things to look at though are your Maxtor HDD and nic as either/or both could also be your prob with the PCI bus runnin' out of spec (Maxtor drives use to be notorious for hatin' overclockers). ;)

Do you have a NIC you would suggest? I tend to stay away from the cheap $10 ones, though they do the job they heavily rely on the CPU/software for some of the packet translation, very similar to winmodems and regular modems.

Also, can the SB Live be an issue? I remember trying a SB-128 in the system and that kept my system from hitting 140FSB.

As for the Maxtor HDD, which drives are better suited for OC'ing conditions? I've got a Segate 'cuda IV as my data drive. Also because they use liquid bearings, as found in SCSI drives, which make them quieter and cooler. Are Segates fine? I've been eying the WD special ed. 8MB Buffer drives as well but don't prefer the heat.

In the mean time I will try swapping NICs and and ripping out the HDD.

    wiggo,

You're right I am able to hit 166FSB without the NIC. I've tried a netgear one inplace of the 3COM and it was even worse..150FSB max. 166FSB isn't quite stable and I'm already maxed on the voltage...1.85v on this board. I'll try a few different fsbs. It's just nice to finally hit 160s but now I'm net less on my XP system. Darn it!!! I can probably steal the intel nnic out of this one for testing :p

    thanks for the tips

hey TruSpeed, could you tell me about your experiences with the GF3 ti200 and the RADEON 9000PRO?
Which would you say is the fastest, or the best overall, and why?
sorry, i know this has nothing to do with the thread, but i´m kinda tired of my GF3 Ti200 and I wondered how RADEONS worked out for ya ...

    Thanx :D

    Tatoruso

I love the the RADEON in my system. It offered me more features for the $$$, and it has video out that can work in conjunction with a CRT connected unlike the GF3 series of cards. Performance wise it is about as fast as a GF3 Ti500/GF4 MX460.

With 128MB DDR mem it not only doubles that of my GF3 Ti200, but it came at a price similar if not cheaper than what my GF3 did.

I am using ATI's CATALYST drivers with my system and seem to have reduced 2D video scores compared to the drivers I got on disk. nothing we can detect with the eyes though.

I've brought my system to a few LAN gaming parties and it handles games like GHOST RECON, UT2003, WCIII, QuakeIII like a dream with everything on @1024x768.

2D Visual quality is about the same as NVIDIA's offerings, I still prefer my MATROX over any other when working with JPG, BMP, etc.

DUAL Head capabilites seem to be limited to a eye hurting 60Hz refresh rate when spanning the the desktop across two monitors. MATROX and the GF4 line seem to do this better.

Other than the few quirks I would say that for the money spent I'm happier with the RADEON than with the Ti200. It offers video out that works at the same time an image is being displayed to the monitor, faster OPENGL performance, more video mem, cleaner video playback. <-- I watch lots of DIVX, MPG, MOV, RAM. AVI.

Hope this helps, and one last thing Driver problems ATI seemed to have in the past is being resolved by the CATALYST driver team ATI now has...making frequent driver updates as found with NVIDIA.

Hey P_dog89gt dump the mis-matched and get either 512MB (Win 2k/XP) or 256MB (Win9x) of Corsair XMS3200 C2 memory (or better).

With the memory you have to get more out of it then try 2.5 - 3 - 6 - 3 - 2T timings and this should give you more headroom on the FSB. :devil win
