    These settings will eliminate many mobo problems unless there are hardware and/or cable connection problems.
    I did set 2.00D SMM and EasyTune gives totally unpredictable results, atm I'm stuck at 7x cpu clock. Yes I manually set tRD at 7 as that was default auto setting also the clock drives were 700mv defaults. I will go back to Optimised Defaults for now and have another look at it tomorrow, my brain hurts :)

    tRD 7 may be ok for DDR 800 CL 5 at 333MHz FSB but not for 400 FSB, with CL 4 it may have been.

    One last thing before I go to bed.. Loading optimised defaults in the cpu tweak page of BIOS does not update everything, you have to open sub menus and optimise again, things changed, like the clock drives, more on that tomorrow, seems I need to start from scratch, goodnight chaps ;)

    Loading optimized defaults shout set almost everything to auto, except few parameters like the clock drives and clock skews.
    We ask then to set certain values to default manually as increasing FSB may cause auto to set them higher, and others just to make sure what is set as baseline, tweaks will be done later.

    Sometimes, a new mobo will have "issues" that include rebooting, instability, or boot loops.

    The following is primarily for EP4x motherboards but might help other Gigabyte models.

    The following settings should be set after you have loaded Optimized settings:
    The settings in my post are designed to get a non-overclocked system to boot so that stability tests can be run at stock settings.

    The most important information in the post is:
    CPU Termination ---------- 1.200V* ----- : [Auto] <--- set to the value to the left (Auto over-volts this too much when overclocking) Auto is OK if not overclocking
    CPU PLL ------------------ 1.500V* ----- : [Auto] <--- set to the value to the left (Auto over-volts this too much when overclocking) Auto is OK if not overclocking
    With your current 400MHz FSB your system is overclocked with the 7.5X cpu multiplier, even though the overall cpu speed is still at the standard 3.00GHz speed.

    The settings in this screen-shot are dangerous!!!! and it shows how the bios can over-volt some of the AUTO settings when overclocking. Posting your bios settings in text format only can be misleading because we've seen many threads with typos or incorrect information. Including the ET6 voltage display window along with Memset and cpu-z lets us quickly spot problems. HWiNFO has excellent information too.



    I repeat, the above settings were all set to AUTO and some are dangerously high.

    As I recall the only manual bios settings were:
    • 5-5-5-15 primary memory timings
    • 2.40B system memory multiplier to run my 8GB of memory at 1104MHz
    • Performance Enhance = Standard

    Note how loose the tRD AUTO bios setting is with tRD = 13.

    The only benchmark test that I ran with these dangerous settings was MaxxMem2.

    The stock Q9550 cpu speed is 2.83GHz.
    As I recall my Q9550 was stable with all AUTO voltage settings at 3.20GHz and 3.50GHz.
    Naturally I ran three extended Prime95 8-hour stress tests using Small FFT, Blend, and Large FFT.
    With my 8GB of memory, LinX was my quick and dirty preliminary stress test where I only run 5 loops using 4096MB of memory.

    Additional note: Memset's Performance Level is the same as Static tRead Value (aka tRD).

    I've taken on-board all of the above, thank you. Today I started fresh with 'Load optimised defaults' from the main menu then worked my way through the template and made a few suggested changes if overclocking. I have marked any manual changes with '!' and have also marked points of interest with '?'. Let me know what you think and what needs to be manually set or changed in the code below before any overclocking so I can save it as a pre overclock safe starting point profile..

    My template says "<-- set to the value to the left" because I used the EP45-UD3P optimized values. You should use the default settings in your system, not my EP45-UD3P values.

    From my experience the Fail Sate defaults should be called Failure Prone defaults. In rare cases you might need to use the Failure Prone defaults but this would be a rare exception.
    If your Optimized settings are 800 (cpu) and 900 (PCI Express) use these settings.

As Chike said optimizing memory tweaks comes later so that you don't possibly have memory issues. In Luke's Xeon thread, he was able to use the Turbo setting with his EP45-UD3P motherboard up to 4.00GHz. With my Q9550 overclocks, I had to switch from Turbo to Standard once I o/c'd to 3.60GHz or slightly higher. YMMV

    If your settings show 800MHz memory with 333MHz FSB, you will be using the 2.40B memory multiplier which should be fine.
    Using Performance Enhance = Turbo might set your primary memory timings to 5-5-5-18 with 1.80 volts. With Standard as the setting your memory timings might be 5-7-7-24, but this isn't a big deal right now.

    Sometimes when tRD is set to AUTO Memset will show a higher than normal Performance Level value or it might even be blank and blank is not good. Your system might be stable with tRD -6 or 7 with 333MHz FSB but it's not worth pushing the limits; 7 or 8 is fine for now.

    I did all my Q9550 and Q9650 overclocking with EIST and all C-states set to Enabled. I do not recommend this approach for others; do as I say, not as I do.

    Chike and I have somewhat different approaches to overclocking and it makes things harder for you if we both suggest somewhat different approaches. I had more than my share of fun in Lukes Xeon thread so I'm going to let Chike take over. I'll be watching your thread and will occasionally offer some suggestions, similar to my ET6 download post.

    CPU and MCH Reference are relative to Vtt and are pain to (explain how to) tweak.
    Their values in BIOS seems to change with Vtt but in fact they are just percent of Vtt, and in some boards are set as such (g.g 0.63 or +- percent value).
    In EasyTune they always shows as relative value to 1.2v Vtt, no matter what Vtt value is.

    Until you need them, and hopefully you won't, leave them auto.

    I have edited the code again to reflect what my mobo actually says are 'Normal' settings as apposed to what Jims normal settings were. Changed a few things as Jim suggested, eg. clock drives, basically almost the same as before, again I have marked any manual changes with '!'
