    Warming up ;)
    Code:

Nothing exceptional, my cores are 60-65c all day long.

I seem to have hit a brick wall here:
    Code:
    IBT High x 5 runs
    400MHz x 7.5 = 3.00GHz 1.21250V: 41.51 GFlops, 396sec, 51C
    400MHz x 8.0 = 3.20GHz 1.21250V: 42.92 GFlops, 381sec, 54C <-lower fan speed
    400MHz x 8.5 = 3.40GHz 1.21250V: 45.62 GFlops, 360sec, 52C
    400MHz x 9.0 = 3.60GHz 1.24375V: 47.79 GFlops, 343sec, 54C
    423MHz x 8.5 = 3.60GHz 1.24375V: 48.19 GFlops, 341sec, 54C, Ram 846MHz 1.800V 5.5.5.18, MCH 1.200V
    420MHz x 9.0 = 3.78GHz 1.28750V: 50.25 GFlops, 326sec, 58C, Ram 840MHz 1.800V 5.5.5.18, MCH 1.200V
    422MHz x 9.0 = 3.80GHz 1.28750V: 50.65 GFlops, 324sec, 58C, Ram 844MHz 1.800V 5.5.5.18, MCH 1.200V
If I go to 423MHz, IBT fails even if I crank up to 1.300V vCore. A little extra CPU Term 1.26V helped a bit but still failed on 5th run. I backed of the clock to 8.5 and ran MemTest twice at 430MHz with zero errors so I don't suspect the RAM. I'm thinking 3.8GHz is a fairly nice overclock for a 20 CPU and unless there's some secret to going faster without overvolting the CPU, I guess I'm happy. What do you think Chike, should I try more CPU Termination voltage or some other setting?

<s>20%</s> 25% overclock is pretty good, but don't give up just yet, we have a rabbit or two in our hat :)

Suspected culprit is the bus, normally few tweaks are needed to stabilize data transfer between the northbridge and CPU at high bus frequencies.

With 430 x8.5, 1.2v Vtt, do all the following with EasyTune, click "set" after changing each value:

Try memory up to 1.9v, but continue with no less than 1.86v

    Try MCH Core 1.22-1.24v

Try 1-3 clicks lower, one click at a time, MCH reference, try the same higher if it get less stable.
repeat the same for CPU reference.
Note that if going one direction gets less stable there is no point keep going in that direction.

    Try to increase Vtt.

Write down all values you have found to be stable, reboot to BIOS
Set Vtt to 1.2v, set the reference values, set Vtt to whichever you found most stable, you will the references scale with Vtt, but in EasyTune they will appear as you set them for Vtt 1.2v.
    Set DRAM/MCH Core if needed.

Hopefully we won't need to mess with clock skews...

Default Re: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

    Good morning :)

I started what you suggested last night but only adjusted dram 1.9v as everything was fine upto 445x8.5 then at 450x8.5 it failed immediately. I backed off to 445x8.5 and it was fine again. So at Vcore 1.28750 I get close to that 3.8GHz without extra Vcore. Before I started playing with settings, as it was getting late, I decided to test how far the fsb would go with dram 1.9V 5.5.5.18. I got as far as 455x8 using EasyTune which seemed ok but it was late. So I rebooted and left bios at 450x8 and started Prime95 'blend' test 4 workers. 9 hours later, which is now, it's still running with no faults so this would suggest to me that the ram & fsb are fine at 445. I will screen shot now then reboot to MemTest to be sure about the ram and report back..
    Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please-450x8prime-jpg

Edit: Now upto 470x8 with IBT pass, dram 1.9v 5.5.5.18 - Going to run MemTest again at 470x8..

Edit: MemTest passed with above settings taking me to 3.76MHz. I would have to drop to clock x 7.5 to continue pushing further, who knows how fast this ram might go? Now my question is this..

Bearing in mind I'm tuning this PC to play Elite Dangerous (hence the quad core upgrade, had an E8400 dual core before), should I raise the clock and keep fsb low and perhaps tighten ram timings. Or lower the clock and have higher fsb for faster ram, which incidentally does not make the GFlops any better 48.95, at 422x9 GFlops was 50.7. I'm thinking 3.8GHz is like the sweet spot for this CPU without extreme voltages, and that stability might be more attainable with lower fsb. I'm not concerned about high voltages if closer to 4GHz will make a big difference to 3.8GHz because so far I've yet to get over 58'C CoreTemp and the fans are moderately quiet. I am concerned about frying the NB or mobo as they are expensive, on the other hand these CPUs are cheap and easier to replace ;)

Edit: PC been in sleep mode all day 470x8.0 as I was working but it wouldn't wake up so I had to reset and cold boot. I'm now back at 420x9.0 and dram is still 1.9V...

You probably should foget about sleep OCed, hibernation might work.

Pupose of all this was just to see if you can go over 423MHz FSB and how, not breaking FSB records.
Now that you know you can and how go back to 9x multiplier and see how far you can push the CPU

EDIT: core temperatures below 40 with Prime95? I'd say you may go over 4GHz. IBT is not a must, Prime95 small FFT may be used instead, not many software will raise CPU heat as Prime95.

Are you saying that even if IBT fails but runs Prime95 for a few hours, then I have a stable overclock? I also have the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool which passes the test above 3.8GHz, even with Prime95 running at the same time, whereas IBT fails. Whatever settings I try over 3.8GHz, with Vcore 1.3 and all other voltages up 3 or 4 clicks just wont work with IBT where other tests seem to run fine...

I meant to say that if it gets too hot for IBT don't use it.
But yes, you don't have to rely on IBT, and stability is what you define it is, IBT may pass and system will crash running FlashPlayer, and IBT may fail but otherwise system will be perfectly stable.

Try few clicks higher vcore if temps allows it.

Have you tried 1.55/1.57 CPU PLL yet?

I'm using 1.56 CPU PLL atm, running 426X9. I'm running Prime in the background, have been all evening but when I went to 427, Firefox crashed on me so I'm back at 426 for now. My current voltages are..
    Code:
    CPU PLL -------- 1.560
    CPU vtt -------- 1.260
    CPU Ref 1/2 ---- Def
    CPU Vcore ------ 1.300
    DRAM ---------- 1.9
    DRAM Term ----- 0.925
    Chan A/B ------- Def
    MCH Core ------ 1.22

ok I've broken past the 4GHz speed with IBT pass but I'm a little confused about the results. Vcore is up to 1.35625 and max temp 63'C and the time to complete the test has fallen to 307 secs. But at every speed from 425x9 to 445x9 the MFlops were constantly in the high 50s and only once did I see it break 51. I can get the same high 50s with 420x9 @ 1.28750 Vcore so my question is.. How important is MFlops in terms of computing power? It seems strange that I can get the same speed in MFlops at much lower speeds, voltages, temp, etc.
