    Settings Changelog

After running Prime95 on default settings I had a little trouble at first changing settings in BIOS from AUTO because the system didn't post. However, after some guidance from profJim I̶ ̶m̶a̶n̶u̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶n̶g̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶F̶S̶B̶ ̶S̶t̶r̶a̶p̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶3̶3̶3̶M̶H̶z̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶m̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶f̶i̶x̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶i̶s̶s̶u̶e̶ Apparently even though I was able to boot into windows once, but after that it failed to post. I am also still getting this weird message during the boot process that says "BIOS update recommended. To unleash this CPU's full power, please perform BIOS update process." I was under the impression that my BIOS version was Ket's 5th Anniversary FINAL modded BIOS, which appears to be the latest one for the LGA 771/775 mod. I'm wondering if there's a way to disable this message. The BIOS version link above points to my actual .ROM file in dropbox.

If you see anything I'm doing wrong or you have any advice for me going forward, please let me know.

    ---------------------------

So I narrowed the problem down the the Transaction Booster. I had it set to manual and it defaulted to [5], but I know that I've set it to [10] before and had the same issue. For some reason even touching this causes the system to fail. I changed all other values as normal and this is the only option that caused the computer not to boot when changed. Not sure exactly why but for now I will leave it on AUTO and proceed with a minor overclock stress test.

It looks like using Xeon processors is causing the boot message and your bios needs to be modded by adding Xeon cpu microcode to eliminate the message.

Check out: [MOD] LGA775 Support For LGA771 Xeon CPUs - Page 87

I don't know if the above fix will work with your X5470 cpu.

It looks like Ket's famous bios mods did NOT include adding Xeon cpu microcodes.

I added the LGA 771 microcode in the thread you linked into Ket's BIOS using MMTOOL (three .bin files) and that seems to have taken care of the error message, but the system still fails to post when I change the Transaction Booster to Manual. I will continue looking into this but in the meantime I will see how far I can push without changing this setting. The 336MHz overclock was successful, and I'm about to stress test 340MHz. I'll do as much as I can before I have to go to work.

tRFC = 52 is fine for 2 x 2GB of ram at 800MHz, but with 4 x 2GB setting it to 56 for now might improve stability.

You shouldn't be messing with the Transaction Booster right now because this is a tricky setting that should only be tried after you have reached your final overclock.

    Check out:

A web search using: asus p5q transaction booster will provide additional information that will help.

<strike>Apologies for disappearing for a bit. I had some car trouble and general life stuff keeping me busy but $1500 later and it's all fixed up.

I finally gave in and bought a new case which has definitely improved temps, but I'm still hitting that wall at 350fsb @ 333strap. Others with my board have reportedly gone up to 450, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I believe the cooler is seated properly and everything.

I don't think it's that unstable since prime95 runs for a little over an hour. I will update later with screenshots when I am not fighting the mobile site just to type.

This setup is 10MHz above my current stable settings and threw out an error.</strike>

Disregard my previous idiocy. When I finally decided to change everything back to default and start over I noticed that, somehow, I had missed turning Intel Virtualization and C1E settings off. So that was probably the source of my frustration.

Right now I'm having trouble making 4.2 GHz stable at x10 multiplier. I have a sneaking suspicion that the RAM may be holding me back but I can't be sure. Temps can get up to around 80C but usually when I tweak things to be more stable, temps go down. If I can get stable I may switch over to watercooling to see how much further I can push it before my new PC parts come in. I'll make a new post later with screenshots and updage my changelog.
