this is what i am confused about--> can the VIA P4X400 chipset support DDR 400. Some places say it will support DDR 400, and others have no mention of DDR 400. I am confused ....

Read this, http://www.viatech.com/en/apollo/p4x400.jsp ,which means no official support which is probably as DDR400 hasn't been made a recognised standard yet. ;)

This annoys me about the chipmakers....
either it supports or it does not support a certain item.
The same thing with one of the Intel chipsets....it did not officially support DDR333, but it did work with it.
I dont care if it is a standard or not, TELL EXACTLY what it does and does not support. SO ANNOYING.

I do not care about "official"....I care only about actual.

Also, look at this page: http://www.viatech.com/en/apollo/p4x400.jsp

In the blue chart chart it says it supports DDR400
In the paragraphs below...it says it only supports DDR333.

Why are they saying it willl support DDR400, but not support anything over DDR333.

OMG, I am sorry for the vent of frustration!!!!!!!!

Heheh, if the P4X400 supports DDR400, I cannot wait for the Soyo board with that chipset. Mmmmmm, no more bandwidth issues with the DDR ram and P4's!

The chip makers are trying to keep within industry guideliness as JEDEC, the body that passes specifications for SDRAM & DDR SDRAM, has not passed official specs for many DDR packages that are around atm. They are still being built to older specs which don't officially recognise these speeds. :smokin:
