  • ti4800se only works in 2x?

Greetings. Just got a new asus ti4800se 128mb vivo 8x (v9480/tvd). It is only working in 2x mode according to sandra and 3dmark '01. I have tested a lot of cards with this mobo and this is the first one to do this. Yes 4x is enabled in the bios, always has been. The box says bus standard agp 8x/4x/2x. I am using the newest driver from nvidia. Any ideas on how to fix this? Are these readings right. 3d mark '01 now and my old card r9000pro I am only getting 8430 not oc'ed yet. Since 3dmark '01 seems to have trouble with the identity of my teulatin cpu, the 3d accelerator comparison feature wont work. I am thinking this stuck 2x thing is hampering performance.

Those scores look about right to me considering your processor.

Have you installed your chipset software? That is what tells windows how to communicate with your chipset and its devices and is usually what fixes AGP related issues (not running in proper mode or disabled).

I tried all the usual suspects. Also noted that it says 1x and 2x are the only available speeds. Using hyperion 449(the newest) drivers. I tried an 8x ti4200 and it worked in 4x just fine and got around 9000 3d '01. On another system, the ti4800 outperformed that ti4200 by 10%. This is why it's very odd. I remember reading about the same problem with an nvidia card on these forums before, but can't find where.

I am pretty sure it is stuck in 2x. I just want to know how to get it working in 4x like it should be.

Try getting nvhardpage at guru3d.com to enable the agp and fastwrite options in the properties menu and try to manually set the agp speed there.

This is what happens when I turn it to 2x in the bios. The word disabled is gone from the reference to the nvidia gpu and remains in the chipset?

Latest version bios f9 for this board already. I think I have tried everything I can and am hopeing for a miracle solution as I do not want to part with the card if I don't have to. I will be testing it tomorrow in a few other boards. In peticular, a ecs k7s5a pro v5 that is being used in a computer I am building tomorrow. The 4x ability of this card in that board will determine if I exchange it for another card that does not have a buggy compatability problem. I have until sunday at 17:00cst to be sure it needs to go back.

Try contacting Via and asked them what is wrong with your board, they should be able to give a reasonable answer to your problem..lets hope so : peace2:

Well, I figured it out. After a bit more diggin around, I discovered that nvidia disables 4x in their drivers when used with via chipsets in general and with socket7 board chipsets. Rivatuner has a setting just for this disability.
And the difference was minimal as well. After applying coolbits, the score dropped by 100 and took a 10mhz increase in corespeed to bring it back to the same level again. Then I installed rivatuner and ran 3d '01 again with the same result. Then changed the agp to 4x with rivatuner and found very little difference. The only thing that really raised was environment bumpmapping and only to 114 from 100. The r9000pro @4x still beats it by 30% in ebm. Thats it. I got myself worked up for practically nothing. But now I (we) know. Anyone know how to get rid of coolbits?

I know they dont need to go but the loss of 100+ 3d '01 marks would warrant the removal of them. Especially since I have tried almost every tweaker in the book and settled on rivatuner. I will get rid of the leftovers as best as possable then do system restore then rid/redo all the relevant drivers. I know next weeks 3 month reformat do wonders and get rid of the buggy burning as well. But with the buggy burning, 8x burning speed is taking forever to properly store 35gb of stuff. (should be 32x)

I never realized that 2x-4x agp was just as small a difference as 4x-8x and overall not that big of a deal at all(I will start further testing on this subjuct). Strange that other nvidia cards did not do this on this or my last via board. I also got a real cool deal on the card, reg $250cdn on sale for $219-$159 trade for Radeon 9000 pro vivo=$60cdn+tax. Nice bundle too. Still doesnt work much better than the old card though and would not have been worth getting without the deal.

I thank all for the advice and help(even you soulburner).

You do know that 100 points is within the margin of variation between tests right? I can score between 16.9k to 17.1k on my daily settings between runs without changing anything.

Coolbits has nothing to do with your score. All it does is unlock hidden pages in your driver settings. It does not affect your system in any way.
