At noon eastern today, MSN, Microsoft's online service, unveiled a limited beta version of MSN Video, its first free, high-resolution broadband video service. Whereas the beta release will be limited to only a handful of select MSN users, the final version of the new service, due sometime this winter, will be available, for free, to all MSN users.

MSN Video will offer on-demand news, sports, and entertainment video, including "The Tonight Show," "NBC Nightly News," "Meet the Press," and other television shows from the NBC and MSNBC networks. Users will be able to view a customized selection of video segments or watch entire shows whenever they choose.

Based on Microsoft's Windows Media 9 software, the service will achieve playback speeds of up to 300-kilobytes-per-second and deliver 5.1-channel surround sound, according to Microsoft.
