Ok, I have a Seagate ultra 160 drive running on an ultra wide controller, meaning im getting at max 40megs a second transfer rate.

I want to upgrade to a faster controller. I was looking about on ebay for one but i've been offered an Initio ultra 2 scsi card by someone local which I think only goes at max 80megs a second instead of the 160megs of ultra 160.

What im wondering is, can the drive actually transfer at 160megs a second? or is it similar to the 100/133meg ide thing? Would getting the 80meg controller card still mean i'd loose out on performance?

getting a 80meg controller would slow u down.
look for 29160 or 39160 controllers by adaptec. those are the ones you want 39160 has more feat/connections than the cheaper 29160. look at both of them, usually go for cheap money.
BTW 29160 can have up to 15 devices, and 39160 up to 31 (I beleive)
those are the 2 controllers Im considering myself for my project

Ah cool! I was reading some site tonight that said individual drives dont transfer very much, and the 160meg a second thing only matters depending on how many drives you have on a cable :\ more megs per second = more drives you can use without slowing things down.

I've been offered a 39160 adaptec card. I'd definatly see an improvement If I got that over my current Ultra Wide card? I'm a bit short on cash so I need to be sure I'm not wasting what I have.

I've only got one drive, and I don't plan on getting anything else. So I just want to make sure my drive is operating as fast as possible. It's getting about 20-23 megs a second burst transfer speeds, whereas my IDE is getting about 90 :\

you can also save a few bucks [SCSI is soo expensive after all] by buying an Adaptec 19160 PCI controller card. or you can get an LSI logic LSIU160 card for about $50
