EXPLORER.EXE Failed to initialize properly

I have a fairly fresh install of Windows XP SP1. It's a week old. I ran a thorough spyware and virus check. I've made sure the hard drive is fine, and I don't have corrupt files.

I've run registry tools.

Yet, explorer.exe won't run, so I have no desktop, can't browse folders, etc.

Anyone see this before?

I did a repair install of Windows and it fixed the problem, but I'm still really curious what caused it.
