  • Regarding bottlenecks, BARTON 2500 ?

    Current spec.

    MOBO_______FIC AN19E
    C.SET_______VIA KT400
    CPU_________XP2000
    RAM________512mb pc2700 (Crucial)
    GFX_________6600GT agp

Main use is racing simulations GPL, GTR etc. and I believe a CPU upgrade will give the biggest performance boost for the approx. $100 budget I am working with.

Am I correct? Would an XP2500 Barton be the way to go? Thanks in advance;]

    Have you tried to overclock?
Also, what is the system not doing in the games you play that makes you want to upgrade? Constant lag at higher resolutions/texture settings or is it sporadically "hiccupping".

      Not tried any o/c.

Not really any major problems but fps in multiplayer take a dive compared to running solo is probably the worst.

That sounds like your ISP, what's your average ping?
Try running a botmode in the same level if possible, this will tell you if it is the ISP or not.

You could upgrade to a faster Barton if you really wanted, but it's kind of a waste of money IMO. Socket A is dying, as are Bartons. That said, a Barton 2500 or something around there would certainly help you a lot in gaming.

Thanks matm347 but it's not an online issue. Appreciate your posting anyway, ty.

Thanks Yawgm0th, but ....... hehe you are a bit ambiguous ;]

I realize Barton and all things socket A are old hat, so to speak, and I intend to completely replace this box in 12 months time with 64bit/PCIe etc. etc. However for right now and especially considering my 6600GT is AGP - I need to know where my $100 should go to gain the biggest performance boost.

Your last line seems to support the plan but your opening line somewhat contradicts it. I would really be grateful for any additional opinion you or anyone can add.

              Thanks again ;]

Go for it, but buy a Mobile. Non-mobile Bartons are way too expensive. You can get a 2500 Mobile for less than $90 and a 2400 Mobile for less than $80, generally. Plus, if you want to overclock, it's better that way.

                  Thanks Yawg,

I hear you re the mobile vs desktop in terms of performance but I had no idea they were cheaper too! Does it matter 35 or 45?

So I am off to find a good deal, thanks again. ;]

Which of these three should I buy?

I'd get the 2500, though the 2400 35W will likely overclock better.

Newegg really are the shiznit! Ordered on Friday, free FEDEX option and it arrives Tuesday. Nice.

Anyway, I got the 2400 1.35v - and would welcome some o/c input, as I have never o/c'd anything before.

Currently I have it running 133 x 15 and vcore is 1.55. I think I could reduce vcore although my mobo doesnt list anything lower than 1.4v ;[

Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.
