Is this the new chip or socket by amd or both ?

    Re: AM2 Information

The new socket along with new CPU pinout and enhanced dual channel memory controllers are all to support DDR2 memory.

        Re: AM2 Information

Official support will initially be for 667MHz DDR2 on the processor side but realistically the RAM speeds will get to whatever the RAM itself can handle. DDR400 is the fastest official speed for DDR1 but stable speeds can be reached well beyond DDR600 with the right hardware. Also, AMD hasn't released a whole lot of information about it in this area, so it's actually possible (I haven't seen anything official one way or another yet) that the on-die memory controllers will support both DDR and DDR2 meaning the motherboard determines which you use. This could be key for those upgrading, because right now DDR2's only real advantage to DDR is price.

From what I'm led to believe is that AM2 is the final death knock for DDR1 and the memory manufacturers can't wait for it as they will then start to sell DDR2 modules at the rate that they thought they would 12 months ago (I'm also led to believe that the new memory controller will only support DDR2).

Not according to your boards specs on the asus site.

                  Memory

                  Dual channel memory architecture
                  4 x DIMM, max. 4GB, DDR 400 / 333 / 266, ECC, non-ECC, un-buffered memory

EDIT: Added link to Your boards specs

It couldn't possibly. No current-generation (or any prior generation) AMD-compatible motherboards can support DDR2.
