• Nvidia Geforce4 ti4600 fan prob, need fix Plz

    heyal,

i have a nvidia geforce4 ti46oo agp vid card in sons pc and lately the system has slowed to a crawl even with all maint. well i notice i'd been hearing this sound and was getting getting quite loud with the covers all on, thought time to open and clean everything.

i took panels off and checked fans while running and noticed the top fan wasn't running and was hotter than hell. i thought oh great but easy fix just replace. i took that one off and replaced it with new one but stuck on back panel instead of top one [he has habit of putting things on top of case]

ok turned pc back on and fan runs good ......oooo the noise is there well it's the video card fan..dayuuuuum... great i dont have an extra one of those. lol was trying to check it [dont laugh] using mirror to see upside down and i must of blinked lol finger hit fan, more in middle but noise stopped for a few seconds but hey theres the verification needed.

So bottom line is how can i fix it? i've been searching but not finding the fix as yet.

Can anyone advise please? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

It is possible to change the fan but you may be able to keep the existing one alive awhile longer simply by cleaning and lubricating it. You are going to have to remove the video card from the system to work on it. I've found that q-tips work well for cleaning the fan blades. Often one can remove the sticker in the middle of the fan and add a drop or two of machine oil. Be cautious of getting oil on any other parts. I don't have a GF4 card here to look at but usually it is easy to remove the fan itself from the system without removing the heatsink if necessary but you may be able to do the job with it attached.

Just get a cheapo aftermarket HSF for it. Something like the Iceberg 4 should work fine and be very cheap. Those cores don't run hot enough to be forced to spend much more.
