cable internet network setting

hi all:

I have problem with my computer not being able to go on the internet through the cable modem. I think my address type setting is wrong it read automatic private address and right so to be assigned by dhcp. How do I change address type under network connection? I have earthlink cable internet and any help is appreciated greatly.

automatic private address = won't work

your want to change your tcp/ip settings - right click on network icon, properties, tcp/ip settings then set your ip to manual (not you'll need to know what these should be, if you have a working computer, do an inpconfig /all and let us know what the results are so we can tell you what to put in)

or

drop to "dos" and do
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /all - will tell you your settings, if your still having problems, do this and post the results so we can work out whats going on.

My built in network connections are dead because I put in a new pci network card in my computer and it work with out hitch. thank you for all your help
