  • Gigabyte:ga-ma78gm-s2h: bios does not see sata hdd

I just purchased a new setup and when i boot up and go into the cmos it is not showing the sata drive but shows it as ide. I did not change anything in the cmos, everything is still at default settings I want to install the OS, but not use raid, should it not show the drive as a sata drive instead of a ide?
It shows the hdd as IDE Channel 2 Master,
It shows the DVD as IDE Channel 3 Master.
do i need to do something different or what? Would like some help on this matter.

    Gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h rev.1.1 m/b bios ver. F5
    hitachi deskstar p7k500 sata hdd

    ocz mem. 4gb (2x2gb) ddr2 sdram 800 (PC2 6400) dual channel kit
    lite-on 20X DVD Sata Writer Model #iHAS220-08 6

Re: Gigabyte:ga-ma78gm-s2h: bios does not see sata hdd

It is fine, just how the name it is all. It is SATA

Settings you should set for a NON RAID SATA system are, In Integrated Peripherals page of the BIOS >>>>

    OnChip SATA Controller .............. Enabled
OnChip SATA Type .................... Native IDE
OnChip SATA Port 4/5 Mode ........ As SATA Type

You may also use AHCI if you want, Vista has it's own driver but I would suggest you update it once installed with the proper Intel one from your disk or Gigabyte's site. Settings for that would be >>>

    OnChip SATA Controller .............. Enabled
    OnChip SATA Type .................... AHCI
OnChip SATA Port 4/5 Mode ........ As SATA Type

You may have issues with SATA CD/DVD drives with the above AHCI settings, if you do use these and plug your cd/dvd drives into port 4 or 5 >>>
    OnChip SATA Controller .............. Enabled
    OnChip SATA Type .................... AHCI
OnChip SATA Port 4/5 Mode ........ IDE

I tried to set this up like you said, but i ran into a problem.
      Onchip Sata Controller---------Enabled
Onchip Sata Type-------------Native IDE If i change this to AHCI then i can change the port
Onchip Sata Port 4/5 Mode----Ide Then i can change to As Sata type

i cannot change onchip sata port 4/5 mode to As Sata type when onchip sata type is in native ide the option is not there it changes to ide and you cannot access the onchip sata port mode.
any other suggestions if i leave this in the native ide mode and the port mode is ide, will the drive be seen as sata when i install the OS?

Yes, it will be SATA. It is a SATA drive, the IDE naming just means NON AHCI/RAID is all

You can not worry about the last setting, as it is more for if you are using RAID or AHCI to specify things. Sata Type IDE will be correct for what you want, and will be SATA as it has to be, you are not using a IDE drive.
