  • Gigabyte GA-EP45 w/ E8400 freezes for seconds

I just put my system together this weekend. I have one very irritating issue. Whenever I access the CD-ROM (EIDE Sony DVD±RW), it waits for 5 secs before it engages and reads the contents.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
Other issues: When I select a program on the start menu, it takes 5 sec, before the system will respond.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
When I’m in Internet Explorer 7, it takes 5 secs or so to respond to a new address, opening a new tab, or clicking on a new link.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
    My System<o:p></o:p>
    GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P <o:p></o:p>
    GIGABYTE GV-R485ZL-512H Radeon HD 4850 <o:p></o:p>
    <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Kingston</st1:place></st1:City> HyperX (2 x 1GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) <o:p></o:p>
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz <o:p></o:p>
Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB SATA 3.0Gb/s<o:p></o:p>
    Antec EA650 650W PLUS 80<o:p></o:p>

It almost behaves as if it was waiting for an IRQ to be released.

Sometimes that 5 sec is 10 sec.

Is your computer stable? as in have you run a stress test like prime 95 or Intel burn test for a good amount of time? Or even memtest? Memory issues could be your prob, otherwise sounds like a conflict?

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45 w/ E8400 freezes for seconds

I ran four passes of the memtest w/ no errors.

I ran a 1hr test using OCCT. I'll probably run a bit more of this overnight, but I don't anticipate any issues.

System is not overclocked at all.

Device manager does not show any issues w/ any hardware.

        Anywhere else should I look?

The two things that seems to be affected is accessing the CD. It'll take a few seconds, then the cd will work and explorer will unfreeze. Note during this freeze time, I can move the mouse, but menu does not respond, nor does any items in the system tray.

The other applications that seem affected is anything accessing the internet (windows media, IE7, Outlook).

I can run all different programs w/ no issues. It is only those instances above where I get into problems.

Is this a clean install of windows? All updates installed and latest drivers installed such as Intel Chipset drivers?

Please give me a link to your ram. Have you tested with memtest each stick one by one at stock speeds (Not 800, 1066 I mean)? If not please do for 5-10 passes for each stick.

You are using the latest Memtest86+ right? 2.11 >>>

Then please post for me your settings if all passes fine >>>

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45 w/ E8400 freezes for seconds

I think I solved my issue. I read a post about a person having issues burning DVD's and that his drive was being recognized as a SCSI device vs. an IDE due to installation of the RAID driver on the GA-EP45 intallation CD.

Just out of curiosity, I checked mine, and sure enough my DVD drive was being shown as a SCSI device versus an IDE.

I disabled the DVD, unplugged the IDE cable and power, and rebooted, and sure enough everything was fine. I tried the third option mentioned in the tread of removing device from device manager, removing IDE and power cable, rebooting, shut down, and then reattaching the IDE cable and power cable, and rebooting. This did not solve the SCSI vs. IDE.

I decided that since I really didn't have very many items on the HD, I would do another clean install. This time, I manually selected the drivers and did not install the Gigabyte SATA/RAID drivers.

                Everything has been running smoothly.

I don't know why Gigabyte would have the SATA/RAID drivers as part of the install all option. I really think that these drivers should be placed in as a seperate option as well as a disclaimer.

                http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX8500D2K2_2GN.pdf

I did run the memtest86 lastest version w/ 4 times coverage with no issues.

One interesting thing about the memory is that with auto settings, the memory timing was 5-6-6-15 vs. the spec sheet of 5-5-5-15.

Also, the motherboard stock cpu settings had the cpu running at 2.88GHz vs. the 3.0GHz spec for the E8400. I bumped the multiplier up to 9.0 w/ the bus at 333.

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45 w/ E8400 freezes for seconds

Ahh, Nice to see you got it fixed up! Ya the express install installs all drivers regardless, you are right they should fix that for sure as I have noticed a few threads with similar findings causing other issues

Ya, Auto is not usually best but it seems to me since you commented what you did about your CPU that you have not loaded optimized defaults yet. Please do that.

Load optimized defaults and then set your Ram Voltage ONLY and save/apply/reboot BACK to the BIOS as you will have to set your SATA/Disk settings all over again before you load windows.

This MUST be done on a new build and also anytime you flash the BIOS. It should for sure be done always on a new build so your CPU and ram is picked up properly and all hidden settings that may apply to your CPU are Put into effect. So you do need to do it, changing the settings to make it work at rated speeds will ony fix that it will still leave all hidden/unchangeable Per CPU Settings unchanged. So please do load it, and do not forgot to reboot back to the BIOS and set your SATA/Disk settings again.
