  • Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

greetings, just built my first pc and it went better than i thought with the only real hitches was how damn hard it was to screw in those bloody fans. thanks goes out to Lsdmeasap for the help.

what i want to do is up my performance and stay stable. this is not a gaming machine but it is an audio DAW. what i'll be running is Cubase sx3, Protools 7.4, Samplitude 10, Wavelab, and a good number of of VST and VSTi (UAD, Waves, PSP, Spectrosonics, N.I., etc).

here are my specs and info

no probs so far but am i pushing it? nowhere in the ballpark? doing nothing significant? can i push it further?

forgot to mention, ran orthus for 10 minutes temp rise to core 0: 55-56 core 1: 53-54 (accidentally left case open)

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

Ya, some of those fans have HUGE Screws aint it! I always use my own smaller screws with bolts that go thru and then use nuts to tighten them. Or Some fans I use these one, very nice >>>
    Moddersmart - I Mod Smart Do You? - Air Cooling :: Cooling Fans :: Fan Accessories :: Silencing/Anti-vibration :: Coolink Anti-Vibration Bolts

I have to ask/advise about this before I say anything else >>>

    ocz value series 2x512mb pc-4200 4 4 4 8 (1.8V)
    together rated 4 4 4 12

Is this three different models of ram? You cannot use two different models of ram together let alone 3. Even models by the same brand that are different will not be stable together. So I advise you to remove the 2xx512 for sure and start over

And yes, you have MANY Settings way to low, even for 2x2GB

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

no, it's two different pairs of dual channel ddr2 ram, the 'together' was the combined timings given by various apps. this was a carryover from my old system, 1st was the ocz pc-4200 and then the pc-6400 corsair. i knew i wouldn't get the performance from the pc-6400 due to the ocz but at the time i needed to make a concession on my old dell 4700. i figured that this wouldn't be ideal but i was so used to it. i'll have to check this with just the corsair later tonight.

thanks for the link, my hands hurt like hell and the coolermaster had to have the holes shaved off a bit and the arctic one after all that trouble (i somehow cut a cut from something, i think the antec fan cage) it either doesn't work or wants me to attach it to the cpu fan connection and then connect the heatsink to it's 4 pin female connection...not even going to try it.

Got a pic of this fan that is giving you issues? Is it your CPU fan or just a case fan? If it is CPU only fan, please show me the connectors and tell me what you set in the BIOS for fan control

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

it's the case fan, although i am using their arctic cooling alpine 7 pro heatsink with no problems

          Arctic Cooling

PWM amplifier integrated on motor circuit
4 pin plug for receiving power and PWM signal from motherboard
4 pin socket for CPU cooler or second fan
3 pin plug to send fan RPM signal to motherboard
Regulate RPM speed of up to 5 fans by the o*nboard CPU fan controller

as far as the memory, , i was using both, xms2 in 1/3 ocz in 2/4. i've taken out the ocz and there are some changes to the tweak due to the change in values

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

Ahh, ok! You can just use the 4pin Sys_fan2 plug on the board with the small 4pin Plug and you should be fine. No need for the 3pin to be connected at all

Best to use only ONE type of ram for sure!

So, XMS 2x2 then right? If so, you may (Likely should) set MCH Core to 1.2-1.24

Then set trfc to 52-62 (What you see as original is not what you would get if you loaded optimized with that ram in, just what had been previously used)

Then you may or may not need to raise Static tRead, depends on the ram quality and other voltages being used. You may be able to use 6 as well, all depends on those things of course.

All looks good other then those things

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

did the changes, memtested and tested with both orthos and p95v259 with no shutdowns at max temp of 57 (orthus test).

if i wanted to push it more how far could it go (potential vs actual) with the right tweaks? what settings should be adjusted and tested each time prior to a 'test' save?

as far as the fan, i initially tried that connection but it wasn't working which has me thinking it's dead (just confirmed), i'll find the receipt and check the store policy.

              thanks

              note: what about memset?

Not sure how far those CPU's will go, I think at least 3.6 though

Was it not working at all, or just not right when you started the system? Let it run for a few to be sure

What about Memset? That's what I said as well

Re: Some Guidance on My GA-EP45-DS3L and E7300

man, i wasted bus fair. when i took the fan to the store, the tech/exchange dude fiddled around and got it to work by using 3 of the 4 pins of the fan connect to the mobo, and here i was thinking that a 4 pin should go to the 4 pin on the board...haven't tried to find the right pins yet but i probably should have paid the restocking fee and got a different fan.

                  i'm torn, i probably should stop where i'm at;

especially as i'm a newb to this but i'm thinking the ratio is a bit high, correct me if i'm wrong.

Well a 4 pin fan should work on either 4pin or 3pin header... So that fan may still be faulty especially if he could not get it to work on a 4pin header as well

i should have been back here some time ago but i was a little distracted.

at some point my settings kind of went back to stock except my fsb which is now 1066 instead of stock, like my core and bus speed, due to my multiplier still being intact. i'll post all the necessary info again, i know i still have this setting in one of my saved bios but if it switched then the setting wasn't ideal as i thought and tests showed at the time.

                        1066 is stock FSB.
BIOS settings should not revert as result of wrong settings, though they may not be applied. It could be due to power loss or leaving the PSU switch off for a long period of time.

never had a power outage or kept the psu switch off long. my mistake about the fsb (i remember now that i went back to to oriiginal bios because the fsb was at 1366 or something like that while everything went back to stock. the numbers might be off because this happened a couple of months ago and i'm memory of everything is a little off)

by the way, should i pay attention to the intel processor utility? it's showing a 'reported' 1132Mhz and 226 Ghz core.

                            See what CPU-Z shows.

Ya, that could just be a random error since your Ghz shows correctly in that program.

                              What does CPU-z show?
