  • Gigabyte ga ep45 ds3l - dual channel problem

Hello I'm Dan, I'm new to this forum, and this is the first pc I've ever built; there's real problems running dual channel mode. Whenever I attempt to run dual channel mode, the comp just completely freezes on memtest. However, memtest works fine on every slot if I test it with any single piece of RAM. I have tried setting up dual channel in slots 1 & 3 and 2 & 4, with no luck. I even tried some different memory and it did the same.

    This is my system spec

    Model Name : GA-EP45-DS3L(rev. 1.0)
    --------------------------
    M/B Rev : 1.0
    BIOS Ver : F10
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VGA Brand : ati Model : Sapphire 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
CPU Brand : Intel Model : Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 Speed : 2.66 GHz
Operation System : Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP 1 + All Updates:
    Memory Brand : PNY PC6400 DDR2 800Mhz 1.8v(2x2GB) Type : DDR
    Memory Size : 2x2gb Speed : PC2-6400
    Power Supply : 430 W W
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Flashed BIOS to latest version. Tested each stick of ram separately with memtest (newst version) and they worked fine, but memtest would not start at all with 2 sticks of 2 GB in dual channel mode, it just froze.

It appears that dual channel mode doesn't want to work. Does this sound like a faulty motherboard to you? I don't think there is anything else that can be done. Any suggestions?

RAM Timings are set to default which is 5- 5- 5- 15 and voltage is default at 1.8v.

Everything else is set to default. Please help. I don't know what to do with the Bios setting, I don't want to break my new computer.

What memory divider are you running ie- is the RAM running at stock 800MHz?

Also, What power supply are you using? 430W is on the low side for the specs in your system. Check in the PC Health section of the BIOS, what are you seeing for the 12V line?

Re: Gigabyte ga ep45 ds3l - dual channel problem

Thanks, I'm running the ram at 667mhz now and it works!

Is there any way I can save on the power supply?

They over clocked the system at tomshardware with this power supply. Maybe they saved some energy in the BIOS somewhere.

What brand PSU is it? And I would highly recommend you switch to a quality 500W+ PSU.

Also I recommend you put your PC components into your signature and enter your location into your profile so we can help you better.

If you go to this URL you'll see my system + the review.

            Power supply is Antec NeoPower 430 430 W ATX12V

I will get around to posting my system in my sig soon.

            Many thanks again.

You think my PSU is too light then? It is 430 x 430w. I don't really understand ohms amps volts watts. They did say it was plenty on tomshardware though. That's why I chose it. But if it blows, it blows.

Re: Gigabyte ga ep45 ds3l - dual channel problem

Is your power supply the antec trio they used at Tom's? If so it will be ok.
What memory are you running, pny or patriot?
Get the specs for that memory and you should be able to run it at its rated speed . You should set timing and voltages manually.

Not a trio, but it's the one specified above and at the url destination.
