  • GA-8KNXP sata questions

We have some old systems that we are attempting to convert to storage systems. We have 4 1.5 Barracuda drives that we'd like to install along with an OS on an IDE drive. While the BIOS will see two of the SATA drives, we can't get the drives connected to the SATA0_Sll to work. The BIOS options are not very clear.

Does anyone have any suggestions for making this configuration work. We realize it's older technology, but with budget constraints, we're trying to use existing resources.

    Thanks!

Are you sure these drives that seem to not be working are indeed in working order? Just checking.

Do you have all of these enabled (Disabled would be IDE for some), but not set to RAID as the image is showing?

Here is the description from your manual about these settings >>>

    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Manual Download

    On-Chip Primary PCI IDE
Enabled Enable onboard 1st channel IDE port. (Default value)
Disabled Disable onboard 1st channel IDE port.

    On-Chip Secondary PCI IDE
Enabled Enable onboard 2nd channel IDE port. (Default value)
Disabled Disable onboard 2nd channel IDE port.

    On-chip SATA
    Disabled Disable SATA controller.
Auto When there is no device to be plugged in IDE1 or IDE2, SATA controller will
    remap to IDE controller.
Manual Set SATA Mode manually. (Default Value)

    SATA Port0 Configure as
IDE Pri. Master Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Pri. Master.
IDE Pri. Slave Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Pri. Slave.
IDE Sec. Master Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Sec. Master.
IDE Sec. Slave Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Sec. Slave.
SATA Port0 SATA controller set to SATA port0. As this mode, it support by WinXP or
    later OS only. (Default value)
SATA Port1 SATA controller set to SATA port1. As this mode, it support by WinXP or
    later OS only.

    SATA Port1 Configure as
The values depend on SATA Port0.

    SATA RAID Function
Enabled Enable SATA Raid function when SATA Mode set to SATA Port 0 & SATA
    Port 1 only. (Default value)
    Disabled Disable SATA Raid function.

    Onboard H/W SATA*
Enabled Enable onboard SATA function. (Default value)
    Disabled Disable this function.

    Serial ATA Function*
RAID Set onboard SATA chip function as RAID. (Default value)
BASE Set onboard SATA chip function as base.

    GigaRAID Function*
RAID Set onboard GigaRAID chip function as RAID. (Default value)
ATA Set onboard GigaRAID chip function as ATA.

    Onboard H/W GIGARAID*
Enabled Enable onboard RAID function. (Default value)
    Disabled Disable this function
Those ports may be RAID only, but I am not sure? It does not look that way, just looks like you need to enable them correctly. And I believe it would be these two that would need to be set in this manner >>

    Onboard H/W SATA* .................................Enabled

    Serial ATA Function* .................................BASE

    GigaRAID Function* ...................................ATA

      Re: GA-8KNXP sata questions

      Hello. Thanks for replying.

We printed out the information you provided and made the appropriate changes. It now goes into windows (where as before if we had any SATA devices connected to the Silcon controller, it would hang up). However, where we could see at least two of the SATA drives connected to the other controller, now we can't see any drives.

We are also getting a new hardware found message for a scsi controller and then never finds the driver and tells us that we need drives for this "scside bridge: null scsi processor device."

If we cancel that driver process, we get errors in the device manager and can't find the drives.

We can get one IDE drive and one SATA drive to boot up and work.

      Any suggestions are appreciated.

What happens if you disable this one >>
        GigaRAID Function* ...................................ATA

Sorry, that boards is so old I cannot find any proper information/images except your manual which only is black and white images (Just trying to tell which controllers are what ports is confusing to me due to that issue)

If you know already which ports are which controllers can you please let me know, and also let me know what drive is plugged into what port and what type of drive it is as well.

          Re: GA-8KNXP sata questions

I have not tried a Seagate 1.5TB but to get a Seagate 1.0TB drive to work (and possibly 750GBs for that matter) back in August 2008, I did have to create a special version of the FK-version BIOS that involved patching the integrated RAID controller code.

This was done using something called "cbrom" (version 2.15). I don't remember the exact process since it's been a while. I also know there are multiple version of this mobo so YMMV.
