• Whats next? 3.4GHz Q9550 & UD3P

Guys,

I need your help here. I am quite happy running my rig @ 3.4GHz and may the odd time want to go beyond. I just want to make sure Im doing the right thing (being new to whole OC'ing). Here's my spec:

EP45-UD3P
Q9550 (C1)
2x2GB Transcend AxeRAM 1066+ (mini review)
Gigabyte 9800 GTX+ 1GB
Corsair 750TW
Zalman CNPS9700 NT CPU COOLER
3 x Case fans

I copied the Bios from someone elses post and added my values. I wish I knew how to export the bios into a txt file so I could just copy and paste my settings here. Ive added "<" to show you where I made changes, otherwise it is default/auto.

I need help with CPU VCORE, MCH, DRAM settings etc.... sorry! & Please! I would really appreciate it as I know the settings could be alot more tidy than this. CHEERS!

Re: Whats next? 3.4GHz Q9550 & UD3P

Just a few things I forgot to add:

I noticed at load @ 3.4GHz CPU-Z shows CPU VCORE @ 1.200V. When idle its 1.248V.

Another thing im not sure about is when at idle CPU-Z displays my core speed at 2.400MHz and Multiplier x 6.0. When active or at load it shows 3.400MHz and Multiplier x 8.5.

My memory is running @ 533.3MHz with 3:4 FSB:DRAM 5-5-5-15 2T . Im not quite sure that that should be different to my bios setting. Did I miss something or is something odd here?

Also Real Temp measures cores at av. 51C @ load. I guess I dont have to worry about temps, or?

Thanks

Re: Whats next? 3.4GHz Q9550 & UD3P

It's normal for Vcore to drop a little under load.
The lower multiplier when Idle is speedstep aka EIST, it lowers the multiplier and when you're nto voerclocking it also lowers VCore to save power.

Memory speed is what yous et it at. DDR RAm runs at half the speed it#s marketed at, but transfers two bit of data per clock cycle (hence the double speed). So 533MHz real RAM speed is 1066MHz effective speed, which is what it's set to (400 x 2.66).

51C is very good under load.

You may want to set CPU termination manually to 1.2V and see if that's stable, AUTO increases it a little too much when overclocking. All other settings are perfectly fine, there's nor eason not to runt he system 24/7 with your current settings.

Just to add to nickels response.
The whats next is, from what ive seen 4 ghz maybe 4.2 on your cpu if youre doing a bit of clocking.
1.4 cpu volts ,1.4 mch volts and 2.0-2.28volts on ram seem to be the max mild to high overclock limits.Any settings above those its "I didnt do it"

Im still pottering around my sig, n its very good really compared to my last mbrd but there is allways the urge to push it.Auto works for a lot of things while testing(ive found).
The good thing is,if you are testing you can save a bios template that you know is good for you .n reload it and adjust from that.

I agree ^^^ about the 4Ghz

Would you like to know about clocking higher, if so let me know.

Here is what I would suggest as optimal settings for all of your above overclock

I do see you changes some things you should not have had to change. So, did you ever load and apply optimized defaults and save/apply and reboot before you started overclocking? If not, you should for sure do that now. This is a MUST anytime you flash your BIOS or install new hardrware/build a system. Please read here for things you need to keep in mind after you load optimized defaults as there is a few things you must do before you load windows again after doing so >>>
http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

I would advise you do load optimized defaults and then reboot and make your disk changes and reboot again and then re-enter all of your overclock settings

Re: Whats next? 3.4GHz Q9550 & UD3P

Thanks for the input guys. Like I expected. I made a good few BOO BOO's already and thats why I knew it was a good thing to post on this forum.

Yes, I used @bios to update to the latest stable one. And no I didnt apply optimized defaults like you suggested and no, I didnt apply Fail-Safe defaults like gigabyte suggests in the downloadable pdf guide for Q-Flash.

I got to count myself lucky that nothing bad happened and I have learnt my lesson! This is what happens when you get a lifetime mac user that starts building PC's :D

Anyways, thanks again guys. You most likely saved my hide in the future.

Just a quick question about my ram. If you could take a look at the mini review linked in my first post, is there anything else I should be aware of in regards to ram settings, voltage and timings?

Cheers as always.

Re: Whats next? 3.4GHz Q9550 & UD3P

Never heard of the ram before myself
But just from your mini review it looks ideal for running your machine up to whatever is stable. For lower fsb speeds and 4-4-4-12 timings it seems my gskill memory is slightly better ,but thats what my memory is sold as 800mhz hi performance memory.
Right now Im beating it hard on voltages 2.2-2.3 and Ive probably gone far enough
Yours looks like it will be good at 1066mhz all the way to your max stable overclock on the cpu at very good voltages.
Check the sticky guides posted above for "maximising performance"

Thanks for the info. I should have probably gone for ram that atleast other people might have so I could atleast compare etc...

I'll be slowly experimenting with higher OC'ing soon enough. Im already addicted, but as you can see from my reply earlier, I have already made a mistake (thank god I got away with it) - so I going to do lots of nosing around on the forum here and just take it step by step.

Who knows, maybe in 6 months I'll be cooling my rig with liquid nitrogen :D

WELL HERES A HEAD SCRATCHER!

I use this comp to run both XP and MAC OSX (using Efi-x device). After tweaking the BIOS settings using Lsdmeasap's suggestions (THANKS BTW!), I booted into MAC OSX and ran a Geekbench test to get a nose for the performance increase. After that, I ran the same test in XP same bios settings.

MACOSX
Computer scores 7280 overall w/ memory performance 3928

XP
Computer scores 6115 overall w/ memory performance 3037

Anyways, I think im going to look for a different crossplatform bench test app to double check that result. I knew it might be different but I couldnt imagine that much.

All I do is highlight and copy(right click) the Settings from one of these posts, then, open "notepad" in windows or some other word processing utility. The paste(again right click) it in ther, and save it. So you can repost it easily.

Also if you put "[c.o.d.e]" at the beginning and "[/c.o.d.e]"(note, take out the periods(".") had to do that so it would show correctly, lol) at the end you get a box with a scroll button so you dont take up huge amounts of page space in your posts

Lsd,

Spot on! Everything running super smooth! :D

Considering OC'ing a notch more. Im thinking the ram could do with a performance boost. Not sure how though. Did you read the mini review (beginning of my post)? Can more be done? What settings do you need to see?

Also, considering of changing the CPU cooler. Gets quite loud. Im so used to using Imacs. Any suggestions?

Thanks as always!

What kind of money are you looking to spend on the CPU cooler? Xigmateks 12xx series are pretty good, but the fans suck, I'd recommend getting an Enermax Cluster fan instead, it's maybe the best PWM fan out there.
Btw, have you enabled the fan controller in BIOS? What temperatures are you getting under load?
The Scythe Mugen 2 is also very good and comes with a good fan, but you need to remove the mainboard to install it. Other very good options are the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and the Noctua U12P (comes iwht a very good fan as well).

Nickel,

Again, thanks for the info. Will start reading up on those suggested coolers. In the meantime Ive successfully clocked up to 3.77 with only a few tweaks. Running Prime at the mo and am getting 60, 60, 57, 57 core temps. Hasnt changed in the last 25mins so Im quite happy so far. Could yourself or Lsd look at the settings he gave me in the post. Would I have to do anything different for 3.77. As I said, I only tweaked a little and it booted with no issues. Id luv to give you my Vcore etc but Im booted in OSX at the mo and there are not any good appz out there for showing that type of info :( - Geekbench works and im getting 8057 :D

Ill log into XP tomorrow and post some stats.

Thanks again,
