    OK... Newby here...

    I know very little about the internal workings of computers. I know enough to stay out of the bios now for sure!
    I have a question though, and it may sound stupid... I assumed that any mother board that supported PCIE graphics will run either an ATI or EnVidia card. I ordered a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4 board and an EnVidia 9800GT card as a package (along with 4 gigs of RAM and CPU) Everything got here and I'm seeing ATI-Cross Fire supported? Do I need to return one or the other?

    Unlikely.

    My mobo supports cross-fire and I'm running a single nVidia 7600GT card. No problems with their software/drivers. Obviously I won't be able to run a 2nd 7600GT, as my card only supports SLI mode, not cross-fire.

    Your best bet is to contact the video card's manufacturer to verify compatibility and see if there will be any issues with your card's performance and/or functionality on your mobo.

      That's what I had thought... But asked to make 100% sure.
      Are there any other quirks with that board I should tell my computer guy about? I'm going with a quad core 9600 proc...
      I read where some of the other Gigabyte boards had an onboard lan problem. Should I just go ahead and use the lan card I have? Is the onboard sound good? It sounded like it would be in the reviews.
      Any help/suggestions at all are appreciated.

        I'm not familiar with your mobo. Search for your mobo on the forums & see what comes up. I suggest starting a new thread, using a title that will state your specific issues or problems, such as: MA790X-UD4 Suggestions? It would be best to create a signature (similar to mine) which lists the major components in your system.

        Your mobo uses the RealTek ALC889A chipset, as does my mobo. I'm using LogiTec z5500e 5.1 speakers and the sound is awesome. Will you get even better sound with a quality audio card? Many users think yes. Try it out before you decide to upgrade.

        Lan issues/performance can depend on many factors. Start out with the stock setup. If there are problems, others can probably help you sort them out or you can use your current Lan card.

        **edit** There are some quirks with the RealTek software when setting up a 5.1 speaker setup. Two other threads have addressed the issue where the rear speakers don't have any sound.

          You can use Nvidia in a crossfire board for sure, you just cannot setup SLI is all, only Crossfire

          LAN issues vary from board to board and OS to OS. If you have a card you want to use that would be fine, but if you want to keep it for something else or don't want to use it if you don't have to then go ahead and setup the onboard LAN and see if there are any issues. I would advise you download the latest Chipset and LAN Drivers for your board from Gigabyte's site as opposed to using the Install CD

          Onboard sound on all the boards I have used is fine, so you will be ok I am sure with it as well
