  • GA-EX58-UD4P bios F6 memory timing settings without CPU OC?

Hello! First build, love my UD4P for the new DAW I built. Beautiful board!

I've researched until my brain is bleeding, and I'm still confused. With the I7 using memory differently, I don't want to rely on info that might not apply. My quandary has to do with changing memory timings without changing CPU clock speeds. All I want to do is take maximum advantage of the ability of the memory I have in the machine. I have looked and not seen this specific issue addressed as all the topics seem to include CPU OC'ing as well.

Can I up the memory multiplier and voltage on the sticks and manually change timing in BIOS to take advantage of it's ratings without changing the CPU clock or voltage?

    Details:
    - Intel I7 on a Gigabyte EX-58-UDP4 mobo.
    - Ver. F6 bios that I flashed yesterday no problems.
    - Triple channel 6 gig OCX DDR3 1600 PC3 12800 8-8-8-24 1.65 volts

The memory settings are now all set to auto and the memory is showing 7-7-7-16, 1066 on all three channels at 1.5 v.

SO.... with the ability to change the mulitiplier field to 12, it shows the memory speed changing to 1600. Can I then just do that, set the timings to 8-8-8-24 for each channel and adjust the voltage to 1.64 or lower?

Can anyone give specifics steps to settings?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Just make sure your uncore multi is at least twice that of the RAM. So if Ram is 12, you need at least x24 uncore multi....

To see what the timings are, you need CPU-z or similar. BIOS does not show actual set timings...

Apart from setting the RAM at spec timings + voltage, you will probably also have to increase QPIvtt voltage. (try 1.25 to 1.35v...)

C3D76, thanks a ton for the advice. I've read a lot on memory timings, but I'm still pretty green and I'm uncertain about the way the I7 accesses memory and vice versa and what this might mean to setting memory timings.

So, here's a real dumbass question, but does raising memory speed improve performance even if the CPU isn't OC'd??

Re: GA-EX58-UD4P bios F6 memory timing settings without CPU OC?

Thanks again man. It turns out that the 4U rack enclosure I used won't handle a good CPU sink with 120 mm fan. It's about 10mm too short, so for now I'll be stuck with the stock i7 stock sink/fan. I'm not sure how much OC'ing can be done with that setup. Can you point me in the direction of some good documentation on that?

I can only link you to overclock guides, that are pretty limited since the hardware just came out. I would think you may be able to get a little overclock going but not sure how much

Here is the few guides linked in some posts here I know of, but again they are orientated towards overclocking >>

There is smaller heatsinks that may still work much better then a stock one, did you look around good and long? Just wondering
