  • GA-EP43-DS3R problems..

Hey, im new here but lets see if you guys can help me.
A week ago i fried my 780i FTW mobo. And i needed a cheap replacement because i did not have a lot of cash. So i decided to get a GA-EP45-UD3R. After installing it, everything worked great i booted it up no problems and it was late so i turned it off went to bed.

next day i boot it up and it hangs and just freezes at a random place while booting up (post like it shows what looks like dos). Restart it manually and then it boots up normal. Windows boots up so i decide to watch a movie (yes all drivers are installed) 5 minutes into watching the movie my entire screen freezes and i can't move mouse nothing.. i wait about 5-7 seconds and it goes back to normal. near the end of the movie the exact same thing its like its on a clock when to freeze.

Everyday in the morning it hangs on the booting process but any time after i rebot it manually it works. And it always wants to freeze while using my computer or even not using it, it just randomly freezes. Now sometimes i can ever hear my motherboard "click" before it freezes if i really try hard to listen. i had a 680i in another computer, i swapped it and it all works. went back to this mobo and the stuff keeps happening.

I do not have any BIO's updates so i wonder if that is the problem. while writting this my screen froze... im starting to get mad.

Im running a Q9550, 8 Gigs of OCZ 1066 Reaper ram, 280 GTX SC EVGA, all stock. even if i TRY to oc by 1 mhz my system crashes and goes into safe. Does anyone have an explination on why this is happning. even when doing nothing my screen freezes. Thanks for anyone who can help.

Any Ideas? (note currently my system BIO's is all stock other than enabiling USB keyboard, and RAID 0 with two HDD, the freezing still happens out side of RAID too).

      Re: GA-EP43-DS3R problems..

Your system problems are due to incorrect bios settings, we'll help you quickly fix this.

      We need:
A link to your ram's specs.
A list of your major system components added to your signature.
What bios version are you running?
Fill in your bios settings from the generic bios template and post these settings.

If you're running with 4 memory modules, remove the sticks from the #2 and #4 memory slots. Once you can boot without problems, you will be able to run all your memory modules with some additional voltage settings. It will be much easier to get your system stable with only 2 memory modules.

Did you load OPTIMIZED bios settings before using your system?

Ok well... Here is my system specs.

        -Cooler Master HAF932
        -Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
        -8 GB DDR2 OCZ Reaper Ram @ 1066 mhz
(OCZ 4GB PC2-8500 Reaper HPC 4GB Edition Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2 x 2GB) at Memory Express Computers)

        -LG 20x DVD Writer, SATA
-LG 20x DVD Writer, SATA + LightScribe
        -HDD 1x 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB HDDs/HDD 1x 250GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB HDDs/ HDD 2X WD 640GB 32MB 7200 RAID 0
-OS Windows Vista Ultimate SP 1 64-bit
        -Samsung 24" 245 1920 x 1200 5MS
-Logitech G7 Wireless Mouse and G15 Keyboard

No idea what BIO's version, it would be what ever version it came with. And the COLD boot in the morning is not the problem im concerned about. Its the freezing during the day. I tried doing what you said to do with the memory, and the freezing still happens.

And as for my Bio's everything is at stock, other than Raid [Enabled]

            Re: GA-EP43-DS3R problems..

The bios version is displayed in the upper left portion of the first post screen (if you've disabled the Gigabyte logo display) or in programs like cpu-z, HWmonitor, Everest, etc.

                Re: GA-EP43-DS3R problems..

Glad we cleared up the mobo model #.

Your EP43-DS3R won't overclock as high as the EP45-UD3R, but with your cpu you can still have a decent system.

I've gotta do my taxes, so I might not be able to get back to you until Wednesday night. I going to PM Lsdme to take over so you can get things going quicker.

If you can change the title of this thread to your real mobo, it will benefit you and others.

                    Re: GA-EP43-DS3R problems..

So this is a clean install correct? Just checking to be sure you are not using a old install from one of the other board mentioned. I see you say you formatted many times, so I did read your posts I just wanted to check to be absolutely sure.

Drivers, are you downloading them from the Gigabyte site or directly such as from Intel? If not, I do advise you do so as the CD Drivers are likely all outdated

                    Gigabyte Driver Page >>>
                    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver - GA-EP43-DS3R (rev. 1.0)

                    Or Direct Source Downloads

                    Intel Chipset Drivers >>>
                    Download Locations

                    RealTek LAN And Audio >>>

                    Audio
                    Realtek

                    LAN

P43 is not the greatest overclocker as mentioned above, but you should for sure have some leeway with it. The 8GB of ram is what is giving you issues more then anything.

For starters I have to advise you do not run the ram at 1066MHz until you find some stability. 8GB @ 1066 is not always possible with all ram and boards, and is not guaranteed by either manufacturer. So if you are running them at 1066 already, this is likely why you have issues at a 1 MHz overclock and may also be why you are experiencing freezes. Many things need to be manually set for 8GB, no matter the speed so if you are using Auto across the board that may also be part of the issue.

I see you posted your settings, sorry about the above ramble, I reply as I read so all of that is to your initial post

I do advise you flash your BIOS to F9, many fixes since F4 >>
                    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-EP43-DS3R (rev. 1.0)

Do not use @BIOS, use Qflash. Here is a guide I wrote >>>
                    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

Be sure to load optimized then set your ram voltage and save/apply after you flash. You may want to do this flash with only 4GB installed, may make things easier on you

I am not sure what you want to overclock to, so for now I will provide you with some stock settings so you can try to get that going and stable for you. Then later we can try to get you overclocked a little and see how it goes. Do you have a good cooler or stock?

Your CPU is showing 2.66 in the BIOS because that is what you are running it at because it appears you never loaded optimized defaults, or have crashed the BIOS back to default and never loaded them again since. Please be sure you do that after you flash your BIOS. If you do not wish to flash, please load and apply optimized defaults and set your ram voltage now, then save/apply and reboot back to the BIOS. Please do read the guide I linked about using Qflash so you know what to do after you load and apply optimized.

You see 2.83 in windows (Not sure where you are looking) because that is part of the CPU name and it would show in a few places as 2.83Ghz, but your settings above do indicate you are for sure running your CPU at 2.66.

See here is the name section in Red, and here is the Speed section in Blue, of CPU-z and windows Vista System Properties >>>

So you can check that again and see, you should see 2.66Ghz in the speed section with the above settings

Do not just make these CPU changes, please load optimized as discussed as many hidden and visible settings will not be applied correctly if you do not.

                      wow thanks Lsdmeasap.
Now i have my HDD in RAID-0 so if i set everything to default, i wont be able to boot my OS because it wont be reading the Raid 0. because i know a while back i loaded Defaults and then had to re -install my OS.

And thanks for all the help im going to have to wait until i have time to do this all etc.. so ill let ya know later today how it goes. thanks again.

well i installed a new BIO's F9 and so far i watched an entire movie WITHOUT freezing. ALSO i installed the new drivers and changed the bio's to what you suggest and nothing is going wrong. its amazing. So thank you guys taking your time and helping me, im going to be running games and etc.. for next 48 hours and see if any freezing occurs. I might be back lol.

Thanks everyone again! I'll probably be back for OC'ing help maybe! Thanks again!

That is because after you load optimized defaults (Anytime, or after a flash) and reboot, you MUST go back to the BIOS and set your Settings back to RAID Again, and then save/apply/reboot BACK to the BIOS one last time and move your array to the top of the Hard Disk Boot Priority list.

No a DVD will not work, you can only use Floppy, USB, or FAT32/16/12 partition

Nice to see you have found you some stability! Be sure you run Memtest86+ for a few hours while you are at work or sleeping so you can be sure your ram is stable. Then you can try running orthos for a while and see how that goes.

Of course, that is only if you are settled in where you want to run your system at, if not you need to push it to where you want then find your stability (At least that is my process)
