  • X58 Extreme Cold Boot Issue

    My X58 mobo doesn't post the first time after I start it from a windows shutdown. It shuts down at least once and sometimes twice, even with the default bios settings.

    If I do a restart from windows and enter the bios, I can over clock my machine as far as I want to go and it is stable, but as soon as I shut it all the way down, it won't come back up until it has reset the bios back to default settings?

    It barely seems to boot with the default settings and if I make any changes to the base clock, even mild ones, it won't post from a cold start.

    I tried the online tech support at the Gigabyte website and they said I was out of luck, see quote below;

    "Unfortunately any results off from overclocking are not guarantee, you will need to perform on your own to determine the most stable results for your system setup"

    Which in my case means that I just paid $350 for a board that can only run my processor at stock speeds, if I actually want to shut it completely down.

    Has anyone else seen this issue with the X58 Extreme?

    Thanks,

    Josh

        By any chance does your mobo when it fails to boot, light 2 LEDS next to the DIMMS one in Yellow and one in green?

          Unfortunately this template isn't designed for the X58 chipset. The X58 chipset is quite a bit different, because of the QPI settings. However, If I have all of the default optimized settings in the bios set and I raise the base clock from 133 to 140 and under clock my RAM to less than 1066 at 1.5V, just to make sure it isn't caused by the RAM, it wont cold boot. Basically, if I change anything, no matter how small, it won't cold boot. The X58 extreme motherboard has serious problems and please don't recommend it to anyone.

            Re: X58 Extreme Cold Boot Issue

            I just discovered something crazy. If I completely shut the machine down and use the power button on the motherboard to reboot it, it boots fine with all of my stable overclock settings. What is up with that????

            Update: I just reversed the polarity of the power signal lines coming from my chassis and it now my system will cold boot no problem. I now have green on the left and black on the right. Is this correct? Or is something wired wrong, chassis or mobo?. The mobo still powers up with the polarity the other way, it is just really unstable. Does the polarity of the power switch really matter? I still think that this is a bug on the mobo, because if the polarity is switched, it should do one of two things, power up correctly, or not at all.

            Any insight would be much appreciated,

            Josh

                Re: X58 Extreme Cold Boot Issue

                mem voltage helps mem controller and uncore scales with it...it is not just for mem. DRAM volts needs to be set to 1.64v as a starting point, regardless of your mem speed, especially using 12gb ram...which most mobos are having issues with. And using 12 gb ram may need higher qpi/vtt.

                What bios are you using? have you tried F7c?

                I run 4.2ghz stable but with 6gb ram, and bench 4.3-4.8 without cold boot issues...except for certain bioses...such as f4 final and some F5betas I had similar issues above 180 bclk.

                      For me, the oly way to solve this issue is to drop gigabyte out of my computer, I replaced my EX58-extreme with an Asus Rage 2 extreme, works fine.

                        Re: X58 Extreme Cold Boot Issue

                        Ever since I built my new system a month ago I have had the cold boot problem every time I start the comp from a cold start. I have now fixed it inadvertently by changing the following voltages from auto/stock;

                        IOH Core to 1.3
                        IOH/ICH to 1.6
                        ICH to 1.2

                        Boots first time every time now. Not sure which one made the difference but works for me!

                          Yeah never use auto for voltages no matter what mb your using if you want stable overclock cause to many time auto will overvolt/undervolt. Trusting software when it's so easy to set manually is stupid.

                            HEY JOSH, lol i've emailed gigabyte before about my machine continuously rebooting and they told me the exact same thing even though i was not overclocking at the time. Anyways i fixed the problem for the most part, every now and then when i go to power it on, it will stay on for maybe 5 -8 seconds and turn off, then back on, and stays on.

                              Cold boot, think i ran into this problem yesterday. Tried powering it on with my usual settings and it would power on and off til it reached the bios. i backed the clock down, got into windows, stressed it, exited , upped my clocks again in bios and rebooted, works fine now. We'll see if today requires the same procedure.
