  • RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

    Hi,

Possibly a little basic for these forums but this system has been built from a couple of spares so isn't great on that score. My ram is only 800MHz rated I believe so this will limit my overclocking possibilites. I would like to hit around 3.8 on this CPU if possible but is there a point with this ram?

I'm going to try and match the settings and get any other info as per these posts, apologies I don't have it now.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

It depends if your RAM will do 900mhz or not. If it will do that, you can get 4ghz.

Reduce your cpu speed and test on a high memory multi such as 4.00B or 3.20B to see how far your ram will go first.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

Thanks, sorry I didn't post back before now.

Being rather new at this I'm running Intel Burn Test v1.92 5 times at 1/4 at the moment. I put it up to 4GHz as you said it may be possible and it seems ok at the moment. I'm writing this as it is testing so if I cut off then ...

      ok, poor joke.

Anyway, I changed the RAM to 5.5.5.18 for the moment but I believe it is still running at 400 so isn't overclocked? Is that possible with a 1:1?
I've changed the PCI Express to 100 and MCH Core to 1.20
Will try and post a template thing when I can. Still running on revision 3 of the bios though as I haven't updated to 9 yet (not sure there is a reason to?)

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

Why are you worried about running 400MHz FSB? It realy isn't a problem. You're not using excessive northbridge voltages, so you're fine. I'm running a 486 MHz (1944MHz QDR) FSB with no trouble. 550MHz + on dual cores isn't out of the realms of possibility.

Your Corsair XMS will likely be good until DDR-900 (450 FSB) at 4-4-4-12, and would go on to at least 1066 at 5-5-5-15 with 2.1-2.2v. If you do want to test the limits of your RAM, then you can drop the CPU multiplier to keep the CPU between 3.8-4GHz while continuing to increase FSB.

You may find it more difficult to reach higher FSB and / or memory speeds with 8GB, YMMV.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

We can better assist you if you provide all of the following bios settings.

Fill in the generic bios template with your bios settings.
--> Fill in Auto where appropriate.

            Code:
            Motherboard: Model, Rev#:
            Cpu: Model #
Ram: Brand, Model/Part#, Link to your ram's specs
Power Supply Unit: Brand, Model#, Wattage

note: [U]replace all [B]??[/B] with the value displayed in your bios.
[/U]----> [U]where appropriate replace [B]Auto[/B] settings with manually set values

Psycho101, Just because the chip was 333. Will try a slightly higher one if it is reasonable to assume it should be ok, thanks for your help

Sorry profJim, will add the other info, it was just the defaults so didn't think to add them. Thanks

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

The only way to overclock a locked CPU is to raise the FSB. You have no wories in doing so. The board is good up to nearly 600 FSB, and the processor will simply fail to be stable if this is set too high. It won't cause any damage by itself. Indirectly it can cause damage, by running a chip at higher frequencies you increase heat and voltage requirements. The heat and too high of a voltage will put your CPU at risk. Not FSB speed.

                  Hi,

Sorry about missing the other bits, I was thinking I was being clever by not writing them down as they were defaults.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

For easy overclocking it's best to have Clock Ratio (multiplier) set to its maximum initially. If you want to lower it to go for a faster FSB at the same CPU speed later, you can.

CPU Ratio * FSB speed (real speed, not the QDR figure such as 1333 or 1600) = CPU Frequency.

For a nice easy 4GHz I would set:

Items I've changed are in bold. The voltage I've specified for the CPU is a safe one that will likely be good for way more CPU speed than 4GHz, so replace this with a value you determine to be correct.

Memory sub timings are a little loose, but only to be safe and alow you to overclock further. Anything above 440-450 FSB will likely need you to loosen primary timings to 5-5-5-15.

It's important you get vCore, CPU Termination and PLL off [Auto], as likely the board is giving them more than needed. I wouldn't be surprised if it was putting about 1.4v through your CPU @ 4GHz, which is way over the top.

More voltage on ICH I/O and ICH core are just for good measure.

With the advanced timings I found the numbers on the left (I guess the auto numbers?) were lower so I went with them after testing your recommendations. Thanks

BIOS is not F9 as well.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

Bear in mind thet lower timings are tighter timings and may cause issues. As your modules SPD doesn't contain values for these, the board is guessing them.

I would recommend while striving for stability and while still over clocking to use the higher timings of 4-4-8-68-6 however if you want to test the timings you have set, that's fine. Any instability and I'd definitely try the higher timings.

Re: RAM / CPU FSB limiting maybe?

Will do, thanks for your help so far.
From reading around I get my next question, do you think it is worth pushing for 7 or lower on the Static tRead Value?

I'm running the RC for Windows 7 on this at the moment and have to say this board is really quick. I had an ASUS P5WDH before but it wouldn't read 8GB properly, changing to this plus your tips has meant I can now run my test VMs much more easily, thanks again!

You may possibly be able to get tRead=7 going. However if it won't even boot with 7 set, it might require fiddling a lot with reference voltages, maybe even clock skews.

I'm certain lower than 7 would be next to impossible, given I can't go below 6 with a stock 333 FSB.
