  • Memory Problems

    Hi All,

Ive been reading your support articles on Gigabyte boards since having a problem with memtest86.

    Here is my spec:

    Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3
    Intel E6600
    Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5C

Basically my system has been crashing after a a prolonged period of up time using new RAM. When running memtest86 i get all passes until test #5 and then it freezes 47% through and gives me 1 Max Contiguous Error and 2 ECC Correctable Errors. I then cannot do anything apart from a hard reset.

I have changed my timings to 5-6-6-18 increased my DDR2 Overvoltage to +0.3 and the MCH to +0.2. However in memset and cpu-z it is still showing that i am on voltage 1.8 and that my RAM is sitting at pc2-6400 when it should be pc2-8500.

Please help me, i have attached some screen shots in the hope that someone can check my settings to make sure they are ok (please excuse the quality)

    Thanks
    Steve

    Re: Memory Problems

Most (if not all) pc-8500 ram are pc-6400 ram that are capable of running at 533MHz clock speed (DDR-1066) under certain conditions (over voltage), MemSet main window shows ram at 533MHz correctly, it does not, nor CPU-Z, show the current voltage applied, use EasyTune HWMonitor or check BIOS PC Health to see the actual DRAM Voltage applied.

Check each memory stick alone with memtest86+, it's not too unusuall to recive a faulty ram. Use the specified timings for DDR-1066 (5-5-5-15) and DDR2 OverVoltage.
You probably don't need that much MCH OverVoltage, +0.1 would do, and FSB OverVoltage may not be needed at all.
After checking both sticks, use one known good stick to check the second memory slot.

Please use the latest memtest86+ instead the one you use now.

        Re: Memory Problems

Is the faulty address in memtest always the same? - if yes you gotta ram bit or slot contact issue.

I agree with Chike's suggestions. With my P35-DS3L and 2x2GB of memory, (G)MCH = +0.1 and FSB = Normal is stable at 1066 speeds.

Hi Guys first of all i want to say thanks for the quick responses. To answer your questions:

I have now put the FSB to normal, MCH to +0.1. However my PC didnt like me putting the timings to 5-5-5-15 and couldnt even boot it back up. Anyway got round that and reverted back to 5-6-6-18 as stated on the RAM stickers themselvers.

Checked in PC Health and DRAM is showing 2.1V so im happy about that.

Downloaded the latest version of memtest86+ and now it no longer freezes on test 5 but does fail at 99% with, wait for it.....11520 errors lol.

So i did a test with individual RAM modules. Both pass fine in DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots and both fail in DIMM3 and DIMM4 slots. Does this mean those 2 slots are faulty?

Also i know it doesnt recommend it but what is the consequences of me putting both RAMs into DIMM1 and 2 slots for now (Yellow and Red)?

            Thanks
            Steve

              Re: Memory Problems

I tested my 2x2GB Mushkin memory in various memory slots to help in another thread. Using slots 1 & 2, Memtest86+ showed a 10% performance "penalty" compared with true dual channel mode. This setup passed Prime95 for several hours until I terminated the test.

It's possible that slots 3 & 4 have problems, but it might be caused by incompatibility between your memory and your mobo. The best test is if you can borrow a set of comparable memory and re-test the other modules in your system.

              Other options include:
              1) Loosen your primary memory timings to 5-7-7-24 and test in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4.
              2) Underclock your memory to run at 800MHz and test in dual channel mode. If this proves stable, you might be able to use tighter memory timings at 800MHz that will give you virtually identical performance to running at 1066MHz.

In several other threads, memory problems are often eliminated by upgrading to better quality memory and avoiding value (budget) ram.

Well ive checked the compatibility and this RAM should be compatible with this mobo. Also i dont have any RAM to borrow to test the other slots.

I have tried to loosen the timings which limits the errors to 3040 now in slots 1&3 and 2&4. It looks to me like a new board dont you think?

                  Re: Memory Problems

I suspect that your memory is at fault, as I've seen too many problems with budget 1066 memory.
Unless you test your system with different memory, you won't know for sure.
Underclock your memory to 800MHz and test in dual channel mode, it might work fine.
You'd be amazed at the number of hardware incompatibility issues we see, sometimes it's a brand new psu, sometimes a replacement graphics card (different brand, but same model).
If you can't test different memory in your system, then rma-ing is the only option you have. Let us know how you make out.

I dont mean to sound silly, but how do i underclock in the BIOS...what do i have to change?
Also you say psu's can cause this problem? funny that because ive had a new corsair 680W psu!

Just to update, ive ran memtest for about 2 hours with the RAM in slot 1 and 2 and to be honest ive not noticed much difference. If its stable then im happy

To verify the slots, I suggest to set multiplier to 3.00A(DDR-800), timings 5-5-5-18, DDR2 OverVoltage +0.1, Static tRead Value one tick above the minimal value you can boot with, and run memtest86+ again. If it failes I think it's safe to say it's the board.

                        Re: Memory Problems

If you haven't already, you need to run Memtest86+ V4.0, not the version you have.

That version and it's so called single CPU version both exhibit false problems on moddern configs. There are even reports of the SMP version (which you're using) falling over because it doesn't understand how to deal with quad core CPU's.

Download and run Memtest86+ from here: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and read about version issues here: Memtest86 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"There are two versions (or "streams") of Memtest86. One is simply known as Memtest86 (current version 3.5) and the other is known as Memtest86+ (current version 4.0). They both have almost identical screen appearance. The 3.5 version is known to fail on some (or many, or most) computers with 4 GB of installed memory (the failure results in a spontaneous system reboot soon after the program starts running). The Memtest86+ 4.0 version does not exhibit this behavior. Also, there is a single-core and multi-core version of the Memtest86 3.5 version, and the multi-core version has been observed to not function on systems with AMD nor Intel Quad-core CPUs."
