EX58-UD4P 920 safest o/c with stock Cooler

HI guys,
What speed can i take a i7 920 cpu to with the stock cooler.Cant afford a better one just yet but would like to push it.

3.2 was the highest i could go with stock cooler,just set the bclk to give you 3ghz 160 i think and turbo will boost it to 3.2 all you need to set is your ram voltage to 1.64 ram multi to give you rams rated speed cpu voltage on normal setting thats it.leave everything else as it is and on auto

I think it depends on temps. Keep them below 70 (individual temps not overall) and it should be fine. I am currently running mine @ 3.2Ghz with out to much temperature problems. Cant wait for my cpu block conversion kit to arrive.



I found that keeping memory multiplier to 8 and the uncore frequency to 16 and the QPI link speed to 36 easiest to get stable. I might be wrong with settings as i have only been on i7 for a few days so i have lots and lots to learn and try.

I also tested higher but that was at a very low ambient temp and it was getting very close to 80 on the cores.

Everyone has their own personal temp limit. IMO (nobody is right or wrong but...) I would confidently run up to 80-85c. An i7 is a hot S.O.B in both performance and heat produced.

You may as Wazza has, only get 3.2GHz before things get toasty or if like Johnothan, you have low ambient, 3.6 may be easy.

TBH at 3.2GHz you will notice a big improvement. Not a 1GHz OC but not all that far away. When you get the cash for a cooler is when you can go mental with it.

I've seen good results with "the usual suspects" as far as air coolers go, with the TRUE, Prolimatech Megahalems and Noctua Tower coolers being excellent. The humble budgeters favorite Titan Fenrir does a good job too. I can also recommend a Corsair H50, replace the fan with a Noctua (same model as in my sig) and at my ambient, on a Core 2 Quad it edges out the TRUE by a few degrees at any given ambient. You also get a ludicrous 5 minutes or so of real mega cooling power if you happen to have the rig in a room that gets cold at night. Foa a while, the coolant inside retains the cold temp long enough to see 45c at 4.2GHz on a Q9650 @ 1.440V. It's shortlived though and it soon rises to a reasonable 66C.

In essence, be patient and cautious on stock cooling but push if you like, noting that temp rather than voltages and clock speed potential will be the limit until you get the best cooling you can.

I agree, 3-3.2 or so is about all you can hope for with a stock cooler

Start saving, a better cooler will get you to 3.8-4Ghz

There are plenty of Coolers around,what are you using .It seems you have to be careful not to get one which clashes with hardware on mobo.
Any good suggestions.

i use the akasa nero-ak 967 it gives good temps and i can clock to 4.3ghz with it but to be honest id go for a thermalright ultra 120/extreme or a corsair h50 watercooled sealed unit or a noctua,the akasa is a right pain to fit with push pins on it,its worth spending abit more for one with a backplate...but you will have to remove your mb to fit it,unless you have a modern case with a cut out so you can fit a cpu cooler backplate.DONT buy coolit domino either ive had one of those fail and leak coolant very weak,h50 use metal barbs and are alot stronger

The TRUE should fit nicely. The main factor will be the height of your RAM's heat spreaders. If you like I don't mind measuring the amount of clearance between the board and first line of fins for you. Let me know if you want that measurement and I'll post it up when I can.

Yea, I sorta ran into that issue. but there is a tiny bit of clearance between my TRUE and the high corsair fins on the memory, so I was lucky.
