  • Wiierd USB keyboard problem with F9m BIOS, EX58-UD5 vs 1.0 mobo

    Hi All,

Details of my current setup are at the beginning of this thread:

Basically after flashing my BIOS to update to F9m following the QFlash guide in the Forums (so yes I did do it right and the flash completed with no problems) the system posted but hung at the Gigabyte Flash screen. No keypresses worked and so I couldnt get into the BIOS setup and the system didnt boot.

Sooo I disconnected my Advent USB illuminated keyboard and used a USB-PS2 converter to plug the keyboard into the PS-2 port on the back of the PC instead of a USB Port et Voila! the system booted fine. At this stage I had optimised defaults loaded in the BIOS no Overclock.

So I checked the following in the Integrated peripherals section:

    1. USB 1.0 controller = [enabled]
    2. USB 2.0 controller = [enabled]
    3. USB Keyboard function = [enabled]
    4. Disabled the full screen log so I could see what was happenning

Reboot same result after post the CPU type is announced but the memory check never completes it hangs there

So then tried the USB keyboard in other USB ports on the back of the PC no matter which one I put the USB keyboard into it hangs after post at same place. I tried my USB mouse in the same ports all appear to be wortking fine.

OK so then I try plugging the USB keyboard into a USB port on the side of my monitor and whatdya know it boots fine. I look in device manager there are no conflicts all devices appear to be working as they should.

    So my questions are:

    1. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happenning? could it be BIOS related? I ask this because previously I had version F9e installed and it worked fine in the PC back ports so problem only occurred after flashing with F9m.

    2. Is it wise to set the "Halt On" BIOS setting to [No Errors] instead of the default [All but Keyboard] to see if it fixes the issue?

I currently have the USB keyboard working just fine off of the monitor USB Port so this is not a life or death issue just wierd and annoying

Already have 9.1.1.1020 installed so guess its a BIOS issue then? Think I should post it via Gigabyte website?

Re: Wiierd USB keyboard problem with F9m BIOS, EX58-UD5 vs 1.0 mobo

Lsdmeasap has had alot of questions recently regarding USB Mice and Keyboards on P55 and X58 boards. Apparently each USB device needs to be added to the BIOS before it will work.

As you may know, some devices use the same generic circuitry and controller chips, so adding these can suddenly mean the board is compatible with thousands of different devices. Some devices will use a completely custom design and components, making it more common that they're not present in the BIOS list.

Report this to gigabyte customer services. Also maybe PM Lsdmeasap. He may know of a work around or something. Until then, is the KB working OK using the PS2 adapter? Do all the media keys function OK? If so then you'll be OK in the mean time, there's no loss in performance or KB latency really by going to PS2.

Well like I posted Psy if I connect the USB keyboard via the monitor USB hub its fine and all works as it should be but connecting a my USB keyboard to any of the motherboard ports at the back directly causes the system to hang ... wierd

Re: Wiierd USB keyboard problem with F9m BIOS, EX58-UD5 vs 1.0 mobo

I'm guessing this is because when you connect via the monitor hub, the motherboard is detecting the hub's ID rather than the KB's ID and it must be compatible. When connected directly and the KB communicates its actual device ID is where things seem to go wrong. Each ID has to be added to a BIOS manually according to Lsdmeasap. I don't know if Gigabyte will add the KB for you, hopefully they will.

Also keep an eye ot for any new beta BIOS's. It's been known for things like this to be updated in beta releases first and Gigabyte not let people know in the change logs.

It may take a long time for a result. Of course if a lot of people notify them of the problem with the same brand of KB then they will respond quicker.

Keep an eye out for a beta BIOS in the first post of this thread: http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...st-bios-28441/

This is likely where the update will be implemented first for testing purposes etc.

Re: Weird USB keyboard problem with F9m BIOS, EX58-UD5 vs 1.0 mobo

Will do but it is wierd cos it worked in F9e now assuming that working code is not removed from later BIOS versions and that one version builds on the previous successful code the problem is due to some code which is there but not working properly as opposed to something new that needs adding
