  • EX-UD5 & I7 920 OverClock Assistance

    I have spent many hours trying to get my system stable at 3.9 - 4.0 Ghz but have bee unsucessfull. I can run Prime95 small FFTs consistently I have run up to 8 hours, I have not been able to run the blended test more than a couple of minutes and I have been able to complete approximately 1 hour on the large FFTs. When I run OCCT (Linpack) I always fail arround 5 minutes and 44 seconds. I am guessing it has something to do with my Ram or Ram settings. I have run Memtest 86 and ran through each of the 9 tests without errors. My system specs are: I7 920 D0 Stepping, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Mobo, Noctura NH U12P SE CPU Cooler, 6G Tripple Channel OCZ Gold Memory OCZ3G1600LV6GK, 80 G Intel SSD, 1TB Seagate HD, 750W Corsair Power Supply, HAF 932 Case. Suggestions would be appreciated.

    You don't mention your system temperatures, but should I assume less than 75C max... ?

      Thanks for the suggestions. I actually started out with Vcore at 1.30 and stepped it up incrementally one step at a time time and with each step I failed OCCT (Linpack) or Prime95 Blended tests. I can not remember failing small ffts. I have also tried Uncore at 16, 17 and 18 because I had read some people recommending 2x ram multiplier + 1 or 2. I have not tried loosing my timings I will try dropping Uncore back to 16 and set my timings to 9, 9, 9, 24, 2T and see what happens. I will also try running just small ffts to see where that test says I am stable then try the blended and large ffts and OCCT Linpack again.

      The computer is folding 24/7 and never BSOD's at the current settings. Right now folding the temperatures are 68, 72, 74, 70. Max temps when running OCCT -Linpack with Vcore at 1.30625 were 76, 76, 73, 70 and I failed at 5 min 47 seconds. Max temps when running OCCT - Linpack with Vcore at 1.3812 were 83, 83, 79, 77 and I again failed at 5 min 47 seconds, this was the max VCore I tried. Any other suggestions?

        thats alot of vcore for just over 3.8ghz,i run at 180x21 with 1.18750 cpu v,try setting all the advanced ram settings on auto exept for trfc i have mine set to 60,you can also try 8-8-8-26-1T or 8-8-8-28-1T timings also

          Hello!

          I have a 920 C0 and although it needs more vcore and QPI voltages to run stable @ 4Ghz (211 x19), Uncore @ 3800Mhz (211 x18) and tested 100 min. under LinX, there's something you can learn from it. So, I was only able to get the 4Ghz stable when I pumped-up the QPI/VTT voltage (Uncore voltage) higher than the CPU vcore.
          Note that Performance Enhance is set to "Turbo" and my 1333Mhz are running @ 1688Mhz, 1,66v.
          I really think your CPU is not stable because the lower QPI/VTT Voltage

          So, first, follow JureZ advice and set the timings to 9-9-9-24 and 1,66v.

          Next, set vcore to 1,36v and the QPI/VTT to no less than 1,42v. If run tests stable, drop the voltages a bit, vcore first.

              Hi Phillywood I just have had no luck passing either OCCT (Linpack) or Prime 64 blended or Large ffts for any length of time on any number of combinations. 95% of the time I fail OCCT at 5 mins 45 seconds always the same time. I have run small ffts for 8 hours without a failure so at least from what I have read this leads me to believe it maybe a memory issue. I have run through all the Memtest86 tests and per recommendations I completed 5 passes of test 5 and at least 2 passes of all the other tests and they all passed. I can also run folding bigadv units without BSOD's I just haven't figured out the combination to get stable or I have a bad board or memory. My settings are basically at what I have listed in my initial post but I dropped Vcore all the way back to 1.3, put QPI/Vtt at 1.34 and bumped IOH to 1.24 and set my memory to 9,9,9,24,2T with the other memory settings on auto. This is where I ran 8 hours of small ffts. I have moved my QPI up and down from 1.30 to 1.38 and have droped my vcore to as low as 1.18750 with a QPI/Vtt at 1.30 but here I got a no boot. From there I started in again at Vcore at 1.28750 and QPI/Vtt at 1.30 where I was able to boot but could not run a minute of blended Prime 95. I did not run a test with small ffts at this setting but went to a Vcore of 1.3000/QPI/Vtt 1.34, changed my memory to 9,9,9,24 and bumped IOH to 1.24. Completed small ffts without an issues but only made it 7 mins through Large FFTs. I am going to be gone for a couple of weeks but am going to let the computer fold with the settings I have and see what happens. When I return I will continue to pursue this and try your settings also. Hopefully it is something I am just missing.

                You really do not need to pump-up the IOH voltages to reach the 4Ghz stable. The chipset X58 handles with 4Ghz just fine @ stock voltages (1.1v).

                Again, the problems were the CPU and QPI voltages. You'll need 1.42v QPI at least if you want to run your RAM @ 1600Mhz (CPU @ 4Ghz). Trust me on this. The only way to get it to run @ 4Ghz and low QPI voltages, LinX stable, is to underclock your 1600Mhz OCZ RAM 'cause the Uncore frequency drops.
                Next time you get a "no boot", check the CMOS Error code; if it shows "C1", the problem was the RAM; if the code led shows "88", then, most certainty, the problem were the voltages.

                  Thanks Johnny Rock. Right now I was not trying to run at 1600 Mhz, but just trying to run at 3.8 - 4.0 stable. Where I am getting confused is that it appears some are hitting 4.0 with low Vcore (1.28 or lower) while others are at 1.35 or higher. Are you saying if I keep my memory around 1200 - 1400 Mhz I should be somewhere around 1.34 Vcore and 1.46 QPI/Vtt? I have tried numerous combinations but I have not pushed my QPI that high yet, I guess that could be my problem. When I get back I will try that. In the mean time I will drop my IOH voltage back down to 1.1.

                    As every overclocking insider could tell you, there aren't no magical formulas for oc'ing. Every systems are different and some are more overclockable than others. Luck is a major factor here. If you get lucky with your CPU, board and RAM, it's easier for you to overclock the system's components.
                    The lower memory frequencies afects mainly the Uncore (QPI), so, yes, indeed, if you run your RAM @ 1200-1400 MHz, you'll need less QPI/Vtt voltage.
                    However, you have 1600Mhz RAM sticks. If you are about to underclock them, you can decrease the RAM voltage if you want. Depending on timings, i.e. 8-8-8-20, you can set the memory voltage to 1,6v or so.
                    Anyway, the correct voltages I just can't tell, it's up to you to find it out. Also, you don't need to set the Uncore multiplier to "Auto". In fact, you can back it down a step or two 'cause it won't affect that much the performance and it might had some oc'ing stability to your system, i.e. CPU @4Ghz (200 x20), RAM @ 1600Mhz and Uncore @ 3,8Ghz (200 x19). If you step down the Uncore to 200 x18 it won't boot 'cause it needs to be 2x the RAM frequency or a ratio of 2x +1 . If you set the RAM to 1400Mhz, you can set the Uncore to 2,8Ghz [200 x14, (2x1400)] or to 3Ghz [200 x15, (2x1400 +200)], therefore, needing less QPI voltage for both examples.
