I was running a GA-N680SLI-DQ6, Q6600, Corsair Dominator dd2-1066, 8800GTS sli ect back a while ago. For some reason, nothing came up on screen when I turned the computer on. Not even the bios. I tried using jumpers and removing the battery for a few minutes to half hr to reset the bios but it didn't help. I've just bought a new mb, i7-930 and some new ram. The vga works fine and so does the power supply so they can't be it. It feels like such a waste as these items cost over $300 each when I got them, and in terms of performance, their still very decent. Any help would be appreciated.

Did it ever work? I am not sure what you mean, it died one day or never worked?

How long have you had the board? They offer 3 year warranty, so if it has not been that long you can RMA the board

You can't even get in the BIOS right? Did you set the system up on a box outside of a case, and off the motherboard tray? Do you have a case speaker connected, and if so do you get any error beeps?

The system ran fine for the past 2 years. I don't have any reciept as it's been so long so I doubt I can claim back on it. As for the comp, it's because I was running Win7 beta before hand, and hand just formatted with a clean install of windows. I decided to apply some new thermal paste. It work the first time round. The next day when I tried turning the computer on, nothing popped up on the screen. So I used jumpers to reset the bios and it worked fine then. Next day, same thing happened, only this time a short reset via jumpers didn't help, so I had to take off the battery for about an hr before it would work again. After that it was just a series of random times when it'ld work and won't work over a period of 2 weeks. In the end, it didn't work more than it would.

        Re: GA-N680SLI-DQ6 Rev2.0

Well you may not need a receipt, they ask for a receipt Number but you can just enter that you do not have anymore.

Is the board older than 3 years? You can check this way

GIGABYTE determines warranty based on the manufacture date. The manufacture date can be verified by the serial number found on the product. The first four digits after "SN" determine the year and week of manufacturing date. For example:

        "4719331822101 SN082540084966" represents the 25th week of 2008
        RMA

Ahh so you removed the CPU and redid the paste, are you sure you did not bend any CPU pins? Mind taking it apart and looking? If you do be careful that you don't bend any pins trying to check.

Another thing that this could do is cause a short, are you sure your heatsink or backplate to it is not causing a short somewhere, or anything behind the board causing a short? You could get the board out of the case and off the motherboard tray, put it on a wooden table or cardboard box and see if it works ok there. If it does, then you likely have a short somewhere. If it does not, try the Intel stock cooler, to test if your cooler is causing a short.

          Re: GA-N680SLI-DQ6 Rev2.0

Thanks for the advice on the warranty. I tried checking for short, but doesn't seem to be any. It's not the cooler that's causing the short either. And I didn't take the cpu out when I applied new paste. I kept it in the slot, and used a plastic card to scrap the old stuff off it. So the pins shouldn't have been bent. I checked anyways, doesn't seem like any are bent.

Hmm, thanks for checking CPU pins. Ya there shouldn't have been any anyway since you did not remove it.

Can you test your memory in another system to be sure it is ok?

Do you have another CMOS battery, or one you could borrow from another board to test with? I don't think this is the problem though because it should work without one anyway, but it is worth checking.

Does the board work properly outside of your case? I mean outside the case and off the motherboard tray on a wooden table ot cardboard box? You may want to check it this way, if it does work like that then you have a short somewhere in the case.
