  • i7 920 + EX58-UD5 overclock

It's been absolutely ages since I overclocked a system (since Amd Skt 939 days) so please accept my apologises for this post.

I'm going to try and follow Wazza300's settings list for my i920 + EX58-UD5 overclock.

    The ram in my system is: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C9) [TR3X6G1600C9]

I'm also using 2x Asus 5850's in crossfire (if it makes any difference to the overall overclock settings).

    Full system:

    i7 920 @ stock (for now)
    Corsair H50 push pull
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 (not A variant) with F13e bios
    6Gb Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800 C9
    2x Asus 5850 @ stock (for now)

you might need a few clicks on ioh core and ich core with crossfire, but test without first, try my template for 3.8ghz,set dram to your ram specs and start with 1.3v for qpi/vtt

I'm going to reboot in a minute and go through the settings with my older pc next to me.

I take it when you mean 'a few clicks' that a higher value might be needed?

Last but not least, which tools are best to stress test my system? I never got into stress testing before on my AMD Opteron 170 as I never clocked high enough to be worried about stability.

yeah just try with two clicks on each at first, but you may not need it,use prime95 to stress with and try with blend test, you can download it on main page in overclocking tools

Going back and forth through the bios screens making sure that I am matching up with the list (though some settings are opened through different screens out of order so to speak).

Setting the system memory multiplier to 10x brings up the ram speed as 1800mhz. 8x seems low at 1440mhz as the Corsair is supposed to be good for 1600mhz at 9-9-9-24 settings.

          **Edit**

No option to choose 1.3v for QPI/Vtt setting. Only have 1.295v or 1.315v -- Going with 1.295v for now.

          **Edit 2**

Ram voltage from the Corsair spec sheet is 1.65v though the board will only allow me to choose 1.64v or 1.66v - Going with 1.64v for now.

Right, followed the settings as best as I could and saved them.

Rebooted and now it's stuck at boot with C1 on the mobo readout

            Didn't even POST.

ok you have to choose 1.66 for 1.65 ram voltage,use1.315 for qpi,and youll have to underclock your ram slightly with 3.8ghz or underclock the cpu a little to use 1600mhz ram speed,c1 error is ram error, just clear cmos at the back if it gets stuck into a boot loop and re-enter settings...you can try with 1.2250v cpu voltage also, every cpu/mb will be different so youll have to tweak voltages slightly untill your stable

Didn't get stuck in any loop. System turned on and fans powered up though no POST screen. I've got a windowed case so I can see the mobo readout without a problem. Memory LED's were lit up if that makes a difference.

                Just to confirm:
                Ram voltage to 1.66v
                Memory multiplier to 8x (1440mhz)
                QPI/Vtt to 1.315v

I am also using CPU Vcore set to Normal (the settings list has Normal or 1.18750v to choose from).

                **Edit**
Going by the settings list, I am going to set the Uncore at 17 (2x memory multi +1)

thats normal it will fluctuate depending on cpu load, when you stress the cpu at 100% it will switch to full 3.8ghz,to run at 3.8ghz all the time idle and load you need to disable c1e in advanced cpu features in the bios,or if your using windows 7 go in power saving and select high performance profile whats it show cpu voltage at in easytune/tuner/advanced/voltage1?? heres my voltage settings just for referance but make settings in bios as easytune will crash if you try to overclock with it

^^^ to show you the cpu at stress/full speed and at idle/auto downclocked with c1e or balanced profile in win7 enabled/selected

                        Thanks Wazza.

Just realised that Windows 7 balanced mode was turned on (had it on High Performance yesterday while downloading something overnight).

Running a Blend Test under Prime95 as I type and it's going ok as far as I can tell.

I've got the Blk set to 185 (changed it before I realised Windows power mode was affecting the CPUz reading ) so it's clocked to 3885 MHz at the moment.

                        **Edit**
Prime95 has already come up with errors on Worker 1 @ Test 8 and Worker 2 @ Test 1

                        **Edit2**
Now I've got an error on Worker 5 @ Test 7.

Will reboot and try Blk 180 in a minute OR do I bump up the other settings as you mentioned above (not done so yet)?

I had Easytune installed before and I keep getting a driver error on startup as it doesn't recognise my ATI 5850 cards. I've un-installed it for now but if it can be loaded back on without starting on boot up then I will install it again.

it should install as easytune supports the 5000 series now,it works with my 5770 makesure you un-install the old easytune first, you may need more qpi/vtt voltage and cpu voltage to be stable in prime95 just add one click on each and re-test and so on untill no more errors

Re-downloaded Easytune off of the Gigabyte website (link on the Tweaktown thread doesn't work).

Version B10.0427.1 according to the setup.
