  • WTF?? EX-58-UD4P AND X58A-UD5 machines. Please help me with this ugent mystery.

After finishing my latest i7 build and getting into the process of making the appropriate adjusments, I decided to run the latest version of CPUID Monitor on both machines. The results really baffled me as there were huge discrepancies in some voltages and in particular what seems to be power consumption in amps and watts. Now, I'm afraid to use the new machine until I get this figured out, so if anyone can help me asap, I'd really appreciate it as I need to get this figured out by tomorrow A.M.

    Machine 1 (Studio):
    GA-EX58-UD4P
    i7 920 C0 Stepping
    12 Gig OCZ gold
    Corsair HX-650 PSU
    CoolerMaster V8

    Machine 2 (Trader):
    GA-X58A-UD5
    i7 930 D0 Stepping
    12 Gig Muskin Redline
    Corsair HX-750 PSU
Cool IT ECO A.L.C. liquid CPU cooler

When the images below were made, the 920 ("STUDIO") was still set at the stable 3.6 setting I've been using for awhile now.

The images for the 930 ("TRADER") were made AFTER I'd just cleared the CMOS and loaded the optimized settings in the BIOS.

Now, In particular, note the differences between the amperage and wattage listing under "Gigabyte DES" for both, as well as the temperature differences.

The first set are both machines at idle.

The next set are both machines at full load Prime 95. Note the extremely high Currents and Powers readings for the new "TRADER" machine.

Can anyone please help me understand what might be going on here? Is it a sensor problem or a PSU problem? I really don't want to have to start swapping components and trying to figure this out, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Vic

its quite normal for the voltages and the cpu clocks to fluctuate between full load 3.6ghz=1.20v and idle clocks which will be around 2.6ghz=0.91v,to run the cpu at full 3.6ghz all the time go in the bios and disable c1e under advanced cpu features, then boot into windows if your running win7 then click control panel/system and security/power options and click on high performance, you will notice the idle cpu temps rise 2-4c when you run cpu at full speed when idle though...all c1e and balanced power saving profile does is underclock the cpu automatically when the cpu is idle,it doesnt underclock it when under load

Thanks Wazza, but I'm more concerned with the differences between the two machines under the "Gigabyte DES" sections about halfway down. Under "Currents", the 920 is reading 78.63A while the 930 is showing 532.50A. Under "Powers" in that same section, the 920 is showing 94.36W while the 930 is reading out at 613.45W.

What is with that? The numbers on the 930 seem to be ridiculously high!

yes sorry i just spotted what you meant,it could be software error not reading the 930 properly, temps dont look too bad on the 930,remember it uses a 22x multiplier for the cpu so it will use more than the 920,if temps are still fine on the cores i would say its more than likely a cpuid error, have you tried with realtemp? or everest to compare what temps they say?? also have you updated to the latest bios? maybe even a beta bios on main page for the 930's mb??

Yes, BIOS are most current. All four core temps on the 930 seem to be OK, even when I had it up to 3.52 or 3.6, but the other temps seemed much higher than on the 920.

Does anyone know what those Gigabyte DES readings mean? Is this some sort of readout on the amount of "savings" the DES stuff is doing? Does the UD5 have the DES and the UD4P does not?

          Awaiting anxiously,
          Vic

i dont know if the ud4p has it,i think that the ud5a has improved power saving than the ud5,des is the dynamic energy saver,i think its probably an error with cpuid hardware monitor not reading the sensor properly but i cant say for sure, with 617w passing through the cpu or any component you would see instant shutdown and temps hit well above 100c,i just took some screens of my cpu with that program and it reads my temps correctly maybe someone can post temps with the same board and a 930

i think the cpu voltage in easytune is the same as whats in the des panel under load/idle

EDIT,set the cpu/qpi-vtt/dram voltages manually for the ud4 aswell, auto will overvolt those three things if you loaded optimised defaults....if you have time to mess try the 930 chip in the ud5a and re-run cpuid hardware monitor?? then you will know if temps are the the same as ud4 that its software related,if there not then it could be psu/mb or sensor error with the ud4??

Thanks man. It would be great to have some other folks post their HW readouts. The UD4P is an earlier board, but the X58A-UD5 is still the Rev. 1, even though it's newer than the UD4P.

I wonder if I've got some bad sensors on the new board? Does anyone know of any other utilities I could test with?

nothing looks abnormal regarding your temps with the 930,they look fine for 100% load with prime 95,its only the wattage section that looks very wrong, and with extra wattage comes extra heat so i would put my money on software not reading it correctly, its very rare to get stuck or faulty cpu/mb sensors on the ex58 mb's,its more common on older cpu's like core2duos ect,i cant think of any other programs to try with but look on the monitoring section in the main page

I've re-installed the HW program on a new, clean OS disk and I get the same readings. I'm clearing the CMOS, pulling the battery and starting as fresh as I can think of. I''m going to put the 930 under the same BIOS settings as the 920 this time and see what we get.

                        download DES2 here.
                        GA-EX58-UD4P (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE

since Hmonitor is 3rd party software you can't expect accuracy. they don't have the latest formula on how to calculate the information being read on the IMON pin (for current monitoring) of the intersil PWM controller that could have been updated to a new revision shipped with newer boards or built a little differently, the DES2 has.

i wouldnt worry since it cant read the 930's power usage and the 980x's,just use a different program like everest ultimate, thats what i use i dont bother with anything else, maybe a newer software version will correct things with those newer chips
