  • $5,000 Gigabyte i7 980x PC: Configuring BIOS and Overclocking CPU / RAM

    Hello Everyone,

This is my first ever build so I am a noob to BIOS and overclocking...I will be editing a lot of footage on Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

I am in need of help configuring my BIOS and Overclocking in general for the CPU and my 12GB G. Skill RAM.

I would like to get to 3.8 GHz on my 980X on Air, I have a pretty hefty Noctua heatsink so I don't think it will be a problem, also this new thermal paste: Indigo Extreme.

    Title: Supremeus Maximus Ver. 1.0

Budget: $5,000...No need for monitor, mouse, keyboard, sound card, router.

Heatsink: Lapped Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler, Another 120mm Noctua fan for a total of three fans.

    Thermal Paste: Indigo Extreme

    Accessories 2: LIAN LI PT-CL01 Cable-management Kit

Fan Controller: Scythe KQ01-BK-3.5 "KAZE Q" Fan Controller

    Questions:

    1. If I were to find fans, which 120mm and 140mm fans do you suggest?

    2. Another Question on RAM:

If I am loading up all 6 dimms with ripjaws, with they be clocked at 1600 Mhz not 2,000 mhz? If this is the case, should I go with 1600 mhz memory with lower cas like:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820226124

    Questions on BIOS:

    1. Any guides for Gigabyte X58 boards in general for overclocking? I checked the UD9 thread which didn't have any how-to information.

    Thanks Everyone.

it will be very hard maybe impossible to have full 12gb running at 2000mhz,you will have better luck at 12gb and 1600mhz, i have two scythe ultra kaze jyuni 1900rpm fans they seem ok and quiet with a fan controller,3.8ghz oc settings in my sig???? if you wanna try,you might need more cpu and qpi/vtt voltage with 12gb,and for uncore freq its only 1x ram multi +1 i think?? not sure on that so auto for now,cpu v anything from 1.18750-1.25000v i would say and qpi/vtt 1.3-1.4v+ you will have to test

      Noiseblocker for fans.

      http://www.noiseblocker.de/en/

Super quiet, nicely made, German engineering and pricy! Sure you will like that

I think you can reach 2000MHz with low 3.0GHz. To reach at 2000MHz with high OC, forget about it. Or you can have low RAM speed with high OC.

I have 4 x 2GB 2200MHz but I have not had luck to get it stable at 4.0GHz+. So now it runs at 2040MHz in 4.08GHz and passed 12hours of Prime.

        Cool, Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I will go for 1600 mhz and probably push it a little further as well.

I will post some pictures tonight, I will be building my system on Saturday.

the over clock will be easy for 3.8 - change muitiyplyer to 27
as for ram you dont want to get two 6gb kits you want to get a 12gb kit as they will be a matching set and you will be able to run them at a faster speed
with tow 6 gb kit the most you will get is 1333 I know there are some people here that will tell you differant
          the ram i have is CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 that are rated at 1600 i can run them at 1800 with timming set 8-8-8-24 no problem
          Newegg.com - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMD12GX3M6A1600C8
          if you want to use the ripjaw G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL

as for your 3 question it would be same as over clocking any other gigabyte X58 UD5, UD7, UD9

Re: $5,000 Gigabyte i7 980x PC: Configuring BIOS and Overclocking CPU / RAM

            Thanks for the reply,

All the parts arrived on Wednesday, so I have had them for quite a few days now.

I have done my research and plenty of people have used my kits for the 12GB setup and clocked to 1800mhz with a high overclock on the CPU.

Also I went with G. Skill because the heatsinks don't conflict with my Noctua when the high heatsinks on the corsair dominators have been conflicting with Noctua heatsinks all over the place.

I will post some pictures and my progress tonight, I have to lap the Noctua heatsink because the base is not flat which is the first step, then modding the Lian Li case a bit with my dremel.

            Stay tuned!

If you need help with settings let us know and give your full settings in a template from my signature.

You may be fine with 2000Mhz 12GB due to 980X uncore rules, if your CPU has a good IMC that is.

                  What does IMC mean? :-)

I will post some pictures later today.

Does it vary from CPU to CPU? Or does the 980x have a good one from the getgo?

Another reason not to lap the cpu...don't void the warranty.
