  • Another 88 code. X58-UD5 locked

During the last 2 weeks my rig starts to have issues on cold boot. I have change nothing. In the first week:
    -code 88
    -fans on
    few seconds of nothing, then
    -monitor on
    -pc off
3-4 times like this, then pc boots up correctly. No overclock. Seti@home on, Mass Effect 2 for more than an hour on, JDownloader on: all is ok. Reboot: ok. Power off, then power on: ok. Next day: same story.
In the second week, I tried to overclock a bit my cpu using an old saved profile:
    -no error code
    -boot ok
    3 days after:
    -code 88
    -fans on
    few seconds of nothing, then
    -monitor on
    -pc off
power cord off, reset cmos, power cord on, tried to turn my rig on again but:
    -code 88
    -fans on
    few seconds of nothing, then
    -monitor on
    -pc off
My pc doesn't start anymore. I'm suspecting in a psu failure (I don't like Enermax anymore. This could be the second psu failure in 5 years ). I'm going to buy a Corsair HX750 (if it's a psu failure), but I don't know if it's support by my motherboard. Where can I find a psu support list for it? I'll try using an ultrachina psu lying around.
    Any advice?

Re: Another 88 code. X58-UD5 locked

Well 88 can be dead board, CPU, or PSU.

And I mention PSU not because you did either, last week I kept getting this on a test setup because I had forgot to plug in the 8 Pin CPU power cable - Air cooler in the way so I couldn't see it :)

So a dead or dying PSU could cause this I think, because I noticed it without full power connection so that could be similar to what you are getting.

Do you have any older or smaller PSU's around the house you could test with?

I've fired up one of these boards using a el cheapo 450W Raidmax that came with a case, so it may not have to be a big PSU for testing. So if you do have a cheap one it would be ok to test with to find out.

There isn't a PSU list anyway, you just have to google around what works and what doesn't. I know many of the Zalman's have issues, but I think you would be fine with that HX you mentioned.

Thanks Lsdmeasap. I have a Premier psu rated 450W here, but it has only one 4pin CPU power cable. I'll try to boot my pc using this, but I think it will not work.

I'll try to clean the Enermax too, 'cause dust+humidity=

it will work with just a four pin,it only plugs in one socket leaving four empty holes, and plug the 24pin mb plug in too,i ran mine on a 300w four pin psu so i know it will work this way but i would buy a more powerfull unit asap

Me too. Thanks for the info.

          EDIT:
          status update

I'm not a lucky man I tried using another psu but the 88 code is still there. I tried a combo of the 2 psu, one for 24pin cable and the other for the 8pin cable: no way. Inverting the psu doesn't change anything. I think I have to RMA my precious mobo

p.s. I tried to boot up my pc without vga, hdd, ram: 88 code

Ouch, ya if Clear CMOS for a long period does not help and two PSU's didn't start it then it sounds like the board went bad on you.

It could also be the CPU still though, can you test that anywhere before sending off the board for RMA? If you can test the CPU on another board I'd do that for sure before you RMA this board

I can't test the CPU on another board because I haven't another board and all the persons I know have older pcs. I've speak to my seller and we decided to RMA the board and the CPU for test. The seller will take 8-9 days to test this stuff and Gigabyte 30-40 days. I can't believe Let's remove dust from my Asus L8400L laptop

Ahh well maybe he will test and find it's the CPU, then you wont have to wait so long.

Sorry to hear this happened, I wish you a speedy RMA on everything!

Re: Another 88 code. X58-UD5 locked

The CPU is ok, the motherboard is dead. The store told me that Gigabyte can't repair my mobo 'cause is an old model and blablabla. They gave me a coupon to buy another Gigabyte mobo in that store: 120€. Now the question is:
                  GA-X58A-UD3R (1.0) 169€
                  GA-X58A-UD5 (1.0) 229€
                  GA-X58A-UD7 (1.0 or 2.0 they don't know about rev.) 269€

Any advice? I know the differences, but I want to know what you think about them.

I love my X58A-UD5 (v1)... I have helped a few friends with their ASUS and Intel Boards and I found my UD5 to be more flexible and easier to work with.

So they are robbing you or what?

You should make them give you a UD5 or RMA with Gigabyte so you can get one, the coupon they are offering you isn't even worth enough to get the cheapest model?

Gigabyte will give you a UD5 back for sure!

I can't contact directly Gigabyte for RMA. The store is the only "entity" that can do it. The store's policy are clear:
repair your product IF NOT POSSIBLE
give you the same product (new) IF NOT POSSIBLE
give you another product (higher level) IF NOT POSSIBLE
give you a coupon (actual value of the product)

ok for the first point, but the others are all possible.
