  • I need help with making my newly built PC stable

I have recently built a gaming pc but been having alot of problems, fixed most but then more errors occur. I have had memory issues with 12GB ram running (only having 6-8GB usable), shutting down issues, bluescreens while trying to benchmark (mostly cpu burn tests) and now it just won't boot past the windows 7 splash screen.

    My specs are:

    I7 950 (not overclocked)
    - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Motherboard
    - Corsair HX3X12G1600C9 12GB (6x XMS3 2GB) PC-12800 (1600MHz) XMS DDR3 For X58 MB/i7 Core, 6x240-pin DIMMs, Triple Channel, 9-9-9-24, 1.65V

    HDD's are:
    - OCZ Vertex 2 60GB E Series SSD
    - Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB ST31500341AS

    Graphic's:
    - HIS ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB iCoolerV

    Sound:
    - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD

    Burners:
    - Samsung SH-B123A 12X Blu-ray DVD Combo Drive
    - SATA, Samsung SH-S223C Black Internal 22x Speed Plus DVD±RW Drive, 12x DVD-RAM, 16x +R DL, 12x-R DL, OEM with software included

    PSU:
    - CoolerMaster Silent Pro M850 850W

    Case:
    - CoolerMaster HAF X Case

    OS:
    - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OEM

first i would update to the latest bios

    http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList...8a-ud9_f5g.exe

what qpi/vtt voltage are you using? try clearing cmos by removing mb battery for 30mins,it might help booting past win logon screen + you can put in the windows installation disc and do a start up repair, crashing might have corrupted either the cmos or start up

I have updated to F4, didn't do F5 because it was a beta. Which ones are the qpi/vtt voltages? From memory (using a laptop because im not at home) i have everything set to auto (1.5V) and have frenquency of memory at 1333MHz

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

its in the m.i.t section scroll down to the bottom of the page, set dram voltage to ram spec, and qpi/vtt to atleast 1.35v for 12gb and then try,you might need more,if your unsure read the mb manual it will show you where qpi/vtt voltage is and screenshots, just look in the m.i.t section carefully and you will see it

i would try f5 even if its beta its safe to use,it might help with your ssd too

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

I am unsure of the RAM voltage spec because on the description it says 1.65V but in the manual http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/HX3X12G1333C9.pdf, can you have a look and tell me what you think it should be set for. Also with the boot i was planninh on doing a full re-install because from exsperience the repair just makes everything worse rather the actually repairing it

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

that rams rated at 1.5v so set dram voltage to that in the bios,i would try start up repair first, you have nothing to lose,it should repair just the start up and save you having to re-install,are you using ahci mode for you ssd too?that will improve drive performance alot

if you do re-install set to ahci mode in bios before windows installation, thats if you havnt allready

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

havn't exactly changed much of the settings in bios so no i havn't set for ahci mode, where about in the bios is that?, ok so the auto is set for 1.5v already so that fine runnin 1333MHz? So i will set the qpi/vtt to 1.35v and repair so i can try get in and flash bios to F5. I have been reading up about "uncore clock radio frenqency" should i be changing that?

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

its best set dram manually to 1.5v even if its 1.5v on auto, then if you decide to overclock or anything auto wont overvolt the ram ect, uncore should be ok on auto but set manually if you want,to work it out its whatever the memory multiplier spd is then add one to it,so for example the mem multiplier is 8x the uncore would be 17x

i can help you enable ahci without reinstalling windows later if you manage to fix start up,if you do end up reinstalling windows then look in the bios i think its in integrated perepherals not sure though unless i look, basically any setting you see in ide, change it to ahci, theres only two options that display ide so set them to ahci, look through each page carefully

Ah yes actually i do know where that is in the bios, don't think speed is the main concern at the moment though. Just remind me the memory multiplyer is in the bios isn't it? Just so i can double check the uncore on auto is set to the right setting

Re: I need help with making my newly built PC stable

yes all those settings are in the bios, for 12gb and 1600mhz speed you would need even more qpi/vtt voltage, its harder to get 12gb stable but not impossible, look for spd system memory multiplier, click it and you will see the ram speed and a set of multipliers in 8x 10x 12x ect each of those raises and lowers the ram speed,if you set it higher than rated ram speed though it wont boot up

                    so dram 1.5v
                    qpi/vtt 1.35v
uncore freq if ram multiplier is 8x will be 17x (twice whatever the mem multi is plus one)

Actually it is all comming back to me, i have set the multplyer to 10x for 1333MHz which was the standard on the manual i sent before. So for those settings above will the 1.35v will be sufficent?

for 10x ram multi uncore freq will be 21x,i dont know untill you try it and whether or not you see full 12gb or 12gb ram 8gb usable, then you would need to try more qpi/vtt and test ect anything from 1.3-1.4v for qpi/vtt and 12gb of ram

Yea thats what i was thinking, do the windows updates for windows 7 matter that much, i know xp won't really work without most but should it be fine without any just for tests while i do everything you have given me today, also when i plug my WD back in will the original 100MB parition mess up the new one on the SDD ( so i can get into windows and delete the dodgy one)
