  • GA-X58A-UD7 rev 1 GSATA 6Gb/s

Could someone please give me some info on this Gsata 6Gb/s connection. I have connected a 6 GB/S HDD to the port and installed the Marvel driver from the website. But I can not see any evidence of the driver being installed and windows has not indicated a speed increase in the windows performance.

Is there another application I can use to test the HDD transfer speed? Have I installed the correct drivers?

    Re: GA-X58A-UD7 rev 1 GSATA 6Gb/s

if its a mechanical hdd then 5.9 is the highest score in windows, maybe higher if two were in raid, for an ssd then the score would be in the 7's

try this to test read/write performance

Please run this benchmark AS SSD if it's an SSD and post a image of the results

For stability do not install any further drivers until you hear back from us, as I advise against installing the Marvell drivers.

The Magni Console driver is ok to use, and that sounds like what you may have installed based on your comments of not being able to tell otherwise what driver is used.

MSAHCI is the best driver to use for the Marvell ports, post a screenshot of the above benchmark and we'll know.

        Re: GA-X58A-UD7 rev 1 GSATA 6Gb/s

Sorry for not providing enough information in my first post.

The hard disks I have installed are Western digital 1.0TB SATA /64MB Cache Model number WD1002FAEX 6Gb/s.

I have 2 drives connected one each connected to GSATA3 port 6 and 7 and another 2 drives conenected to Sata2_0 and Sata2_1

You are correct at this stage I have only installed the Magni Console.

I have run the ATTO bench mark and all the drives are reporting about the same speeds.

I purchased this board in particular for the GSATA3 ports and the HDD's to match. I really want to get them to work at this speed. Your help would be much apreactaited.

          Hi shadow6491,

Mechanical hard drives don't even need sata 1.5gbps as the speed is defined by the data density and the spin speed.
The best mechanical hd would be about 140MB/s or 1.1gbps.
Sata 6gbps was only implemented because ssd's were saturating sata 3gbps (sata 2)

          Cheers

Why do WD market this drive as a 6GB/s then?

                  Re: GA-X58A-UD7 rev 1 GSATA 6Gb/s

Yes, speeds may bet a little better than SATA 3Gb/s drives from what I've seen, but not much like it sounds like you are expecting.

That's why I asked for a benchmark image, to see how your speeds actually are.

The 6Gb/s term is just in regards to the connection interface right now, not speeds of the drives, unless you are looking at an SSD.

The reason I didnt run that benchmarking program was because it wasnt a SSD drive. I will post up a screen shot of the ATTO disk benchmark if that would help you.

I am now a bit more than disappointed. To market a drive as a 6Gb/s rather than a 3GB/s but still have the overall same performance is bordering on dishonest.

Well you don't have to since it's not SSD.

6Gb/s is a connection standard, not speed standard. If you want 6Gb/s speeds, above 3Gb/s speeds, you need to buy a 6Gb/s SSD such as the C300

you wouldnt max sata2 interfaces though would you with a c300? not even in raid0? and i cant see mechanical hdd's getting much quicker atm 10k rpm is the limit in spindle speed

No, you actually do with a c300, single channel sata3g maxes at around 285mb/s so you do need sata6g to get the full 350mb/s advertised and you actually do with the c300 like mine. Random speeds are faster on ICH10R compared to Marvell SE9128 which is almost the only solution as of this moment, that will change in January will p67 it has two ports native sata6g.

On Intel in RAID 0 you get only around 585MB/s Max with the C300's, 700+ on other capable controllers.
