  • Problems with Gigabyte x58-ud5

My rig is listed at the bottom. Basically I love my rig, except two BIG problems. Both of the problems appear to be related to the mobo. I hoping for help. The problems:

    1) Using power saving states like C1E leads to coil whine an extremely annoying coil whine. My system is near silent, except when power saving is enabled. This problem seems to be pretty well documented over on the hardforums. Seems to be an issue on rev2 as weel. No fix for this one except to either turn off C1E or buy a mobo from ASUS.

    2) The motherboard shuts down with windows7 sleep. When put into sleep mode it either comes out of it on its own after 10-15 seconds, or if still asleep after 15 minutes, it fully shuts down.

It would be great if I could get one of these features to work. Before anyone asks, I currently have everything at stock settings and have never opened up this board to overclock in hopes of solving this first. I have tried everything I know.

Hope one of you can help.

    Re: Problems with Gigabyte x58-ud5

its more likely the psu or graphics card thats causing the noise, ive got a ud5 and an asus p6x58d-e and both make the noise with my psu,but it is a cheap branded one

you can keep c1e disabled in the bios anyway, then set cpu voltage to normal in the voltage list and use balanced profile in windows/Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options that way the cpu will still enter power saving modes but without the noise as windows will throttle the cpu and not the mb,makesure your using all the latest lan and audio drivers and update the intel inf/chipset drivers, they help to lessen the noise

as for sleep makesure in the bios that no pci-e devices are allowed to wake the pc from sleep and check in
    windows/Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings and also look in advanced/sleep

      Re: Problems with Gigabyte x58-ud5

Definately not the power supply or the graphics card. Tested the board with different vidcard and power supply and the whine is still there, but "simply" changing out the board for my buddies asus solves the issue. It appears to be one of the cjhokes by the cpu that is making the noise.

Will setting windows to manage power really work??? If so can I up voltage and overlock in the future while leaving this on???

Sleep settings are already set that way in both bios and windows. Tried the beta bios to no luck. With beta bios the computer simply goes to sleep then immediately shuts down when sleep is pushed.

the ones you have now could be better suited to the asus mb than the gigabyte one,you just need to find a psu that doesnt make the noise ect,i know my cheap psu makes the exact same noise on both mb's,and it cant be the chokes as they are solid chokes so they cant make the ringing noise

yes you can still clock to 4+ghz with the power modes enabled in windows,im clocked this way at 4.2ghz,in the bios i just keep c3 states eist enabled and i disable c1e,i use balanced power profile in windows and the noise is gone for me,if i enable c1e the noise comes back

i think its poor emi sheilding from within the psu that causes the noise/interference between the cpu chokes and the psu or gpu not the faulty or noisy chokes themselves

You may need to upgrade to a newer BIOS before Qflash even work. I know that the latest BIOS for GA-X58A-UD3R (F4) lists the only change as "new type of flash support SPI: MXIC 25L1606E."

are you manually setting you ram/timings voltages ect? that might help with sleep/resume

Manually setting ram timings and ram voltage. Only other voltage set is QPI/VTT.
