  • Qx9650 + P45T extreme

Finally had some time today to have a play and after once again seeing screen shots of crazy fsb with mental ram speeds i was hopeful that maybe the QX would be the key to "unlock" the magic from this board of mine. well i feel a little deflated now.

first screenie is a stock everything boot ( optimal bios loaded - lsdmeasap :) see some people do take note )
massive vdroop is obvious seeing as its set to 1.25vcore in the bios

next we have a rough and unstable as hell stab at 4ghz

this all led to a heroic attempt to get a 1600mhz plus ram speed setting to boot.....
no, no screenies for that lol lets just say i never thought i'd have to use system restore because i was overclocking :S.

i got a grip and tried in earnest to just get a IBT stable 3.5ghz with memory speed under the magic line, and i gotta say it was much harder than with the q9550. this qx9650 is constantly screaming for volts, bsod 124, so with much higher volts than i think i used on the q9550 i get the screenie i want.

points to notice.... temps of the higher volt unstable 4ghz and the stable 3.5ghz are almost the same.
i used ET6 purely to show the voltages.
my realtemp gadget and hardware monitor differ by 6 degs.
    this feels slow and sluggish.

so to finish this post with some hope.. i see a F5M bios in the sticky :) lets see what it brings and heres hoping i can get a low temp, 24/7 @ 4ghz OC like i did with the Q9550.

opinions, suggestions, flames, general banter all welcome

    Re: Qx9650 + P45T extreme

I wonder what is the difference between the quad and extreme series besides the unlocked multiplier.
Anyway, did the ram ran at 1600 before?

      Re: Qx9650 + P45T extreme

I have not gotten ram to run at 1600mhz on this board and I have tried gskill PI 1600 and mushkin ridgeback 2000mhz sticks.

And so far the unlocked multis and higher voltage needed is all I have noticed ... Will play more tomorrow

        Re: Qx9650 + P45T extreme

The difference between a normal quad and an extreme version is the unlocked multiplier. Anything else is mere conjecture. Intel may well bin QX versions more strictly, however they can still suck at OCing, which is why I'd never pay the money for one. The newer K series are a little better in that the price isn't completely stupid, unlike the extreme series.

I've gotten a Q8200 to 486FSB, so I was expecting you to be able to get at least 400+. That was on a UD3P though. Actually I'd not be surprised if you didn't get exponentially better results if you got yourself a UD3P and ditched the Extreme. You can still get EP45T models I beleive.

          I wouldn't put a penny on P45 board.
Core i5-2500K + GA-P67A-UD3 ~350USD, eBaying the etremes may buy those.

            Re: Qx9650 + P45T extreme

this p45t extreme board isn't bad its just picky so maybe the higher multi's are causing issues as high fsb hasn't been a real problem. ram is an issue as i have to stay under 1600mhz but then there is this new F5m bios to play with. about to do some tweaking if anything great happens i'll post it up :)

q8200 @ 475x7 - 3.3ghz.. no pics cause i didn't take one :( and didn't push further as my OC nuts hadn't dropped yet lol

That memory isn't going to last long at 1.8+V, just a heads up.

Nice to see you got it going though! I'd back off to a lower speed and try tighter timings instead.

hmmm not sure what to make of this.. been trying to stablize that 4ghz overclock and haven't been too successful without temps too high for my liking ( are they high considering its watercooled? ) anyway i thought i'd see if the board would do it automatically and how it would go about doing it, so....

those voltages are a bit "nucking futs" aren't they O.o.. i took the pic and rebooted at stock to post. does the board really need such over the top volts?
also note how low mch (1.2v) and vcore (1.35v bios which is 1.3v in windows) are :S
btw temps are into windows, take screenie.. no tests were run.

That is 3.6Ghz, nor 4Ghz? Were you testing "Auto" for 4Ghz or 3.6?

Only voltage that looks really high to me in easytune is CPU PLL, but CPU term is a little on the high side too I guess, rest looks ok and normal temps too for those voltages.

Yeah that's for 400fsb x 9.. Just trying to learn what the board requires.. Funny enough I did tests at 333x8/9/10/11/12 and the volts were all the same, it doesn't seem to react to multiplier changes.. Anyway I've settled (for the time being) on a low volt, low temp, 3.6ghz, memory under 1600mhz low cas setting
