  • P55M-UD4 Help freezes up and reboots when enabling sli

    Afternoon all,

Today my friend has brought me his computer to fix as it keeps locking up when i enable sli and i was hoping one of you guys could help me out, so to start with here are the specs:

    gigabyte P55M-UD4 rev 1
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz
    8gb Team Group Team--Elite-1333 DDR3 SDRAM
Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 (896 MB) x2 SLI
    icute 1000w psu
    Samsung F3 1TB
    LG BDROM
    Win7 pro 64bit

Anyway when the computer came to me it just wouldnt boot with both cards installed but it would with just one card installed and he tells me he hadnt done a fresh install so that was the 1st thing i did, i grabbed a hdd and installed a fresh copy of win 7 pro with both cards installed, everything installed fine so i went to nvidia to get the latest drivers which are 260.99 and installed them in safe mode, then i updated directx and when i tried to enable sli in the nvidia control panel the computer just locks up and reboot then when i go back to nvidia control panel its disabled again.

Sometimes it blue screens after enabling sli but the screen doesnt stay there long enough to get the error code :( if any more info is needed ill do my best to get it.

Any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Micky

Is the board on the latest BIOS? If not please update it, and use Qflash.

Here is the latest BIOSes, and a guide for Qflash

Other than that I would suggest trying a few different driver versions to be sure it's not a driver issue.

Installing drivers in safe mode may cause more issues rather than solve any.

I know the standard forum .... advice when installing drivers includes removing, rebooting to safe mode, running driver sweeper, etc, etc but to be honest, it's as effective as wearing a tin foil hat, avoiding the cracks in the pavement and sacrificing your first born to the GPU God "EmoTech the Shaderless".

Follow LSD's advice and do a quick BIOS update. The latest beta BIOS will be perfect. Load optimized defaults after the flash > restart process, save and exit, then restore any BIOS settings that you need altered. Also it might be worth manually setting PCIe frequency to 100 and setting the Init. first display device to PEG.

You may want to try using the latest nVidia beta drivers, version 266.35. They are perfectly stable, but do have issues with certain games and not liking having 8xQ AA forced via Control Pannel. Tis is better than a blue screen though.

So that you can see the BSOD messages, follow the instructions here to disable an automatic reboot: Automatic Restart Windows 7 - How To Disable the Automatic Restart on System Failure in Windows 7 Then you can write it down and troubleshoot it.
