  • Bent pins on X58A UD3R + damaged gold pads on i7 950. Help? :(

Some unfortunate things happened, although I don't know what. The result is that something is wrong with 3 pins in my X58A UD3R rev 2 socket. And something is wrong on the 3 corresponding pads on my i7 950.

The reason I can only say that "something is wrong" is that I can't tell how the pins are bent. The pins are not misaligned or toppled to the side. And you can't even tell that something is wrong until you place your eyes and the light at just the right angles. Then, in the center of two areas in different fields of gold pads, three dark spots suddenly appear. Otherwise, the socket looks completely fine.
In fact, some of the people I showed it to believed at first that there was nothing wrong with it.

I don't have a camera--I'm working on getting a decent one. But I will order a good quality loupe (~$30) as soon as I retrieve my eBay password. I'll use it to see whether I can bend the pins back and to see what kind of tweezers I should order.

But the fact that the cpu pads are damaged suggests to me that the problem may be that the "heads" on the pins have been flipped up or shoved down. The pads look like they have been punctured. There is a black mark in the center of each pad. I'll have to wait for the loupe to see the damage in greater detail.

Without the loupe, there is nothing I can do. But in the meantime, I want to know what I should expect. Did I kill my system? Is the cpu useless? What happens when the pads are damaged. I see that there are gold pads on the topside of the chip. Can these be used as replacements?

I see that there is a possibility that I may be able to fix the pins. I am hoping the loupe will reveal that I was at least lucky with the damage there and that the fix will be simple, although I don't know what kind of tweezers might work on those heads. Maybe one of these may help.

I forgot to add that I got some ArctiClean on the pads too while I was cleaning off the Arctic Silver 5. The liquid discolored some of the pads in one of the corners. But the discoloration seems to be fading.

Having bent pins is not very uncommon. Some people have received motherboards fresh out of box with bent pins. You can bend them straight trying not to break them off while doing so and all should be good.

From the sounds of what you are describing about the pads on the cpu sound normal as this is where the pins are making contact with the cpu. If the dot is not centered on the pad this its not making full contact.

Before reinstalling any hardware please post a pic of both motherboard socket and cpu pads. make sure you have LOTS of good light dont use flash and put camera in macro mode if you can.

I'd like to see some pics before advising anything, but what I can say now is please do not use tweezers to bend pins back as you will only make things worse likely.

Please only use a mechanical pencil, or possibly a needle if you are careful.

I'd love to see some good shots of the socket from a few angles, and CPU pads, once you get a camera, almost sounds like maybe the tips are burnt off or broke/missing?

If you can get a camera before a loope that would be plenty for me to be able to tell, as long as the camera is decent enough to take macro shots. Doesn't have to be expensive, but $20 one wont work of course.

Re: Bent pins on X58A UD3R + damaged gold pads on i7 950. Help? :(

After studying the damage with my loupe, I realized what happened. I believe that tiny amount of Arctic Silver 5 residue was left on the heads of 3 pins. I notice that there was some AS5 on the bottom of the retention bracket on each side where it overhangs the socket along the sides. The 3 pins are located underneath these overhanging areas.
I think that trace amounts of AS5 transferred over to the heads of these 3 pins.

I always check to see that the socket and pins are clean before installing the cpu. But I never noticed any AS5 on any of the pins.

When I started the system, the pins contaminated by AS5 sufferred some damage. One of the pins seemed noticeably charred.

The 3 blackened pads have not been punctured or damaged. I can wipe off a bit of AS5 from the pad. But I cannot completely wipe it off without using liquid cleaners, which I think is a bad idea. In other words, the cpu has not been damaged. Only 1 pin looks pretty bad, but not irredeemably.

I suppose I am now out of warranty. So I cleaned the area as best I can and am using it. I am hoping that further burn damage will be limited.

This has never happened to me. But I can't afford to buy another chip or motherboard at this time, especially since I have to save up for a different purchase.

If you have any advice, I would love to hear them. Thank you. :|

Incidentally, I have noticed that many people have had trouble with the X58A-UD3R. My system alternated between stable and unstable, too, for a while--even before I damaged the socket. But, using pc cable anchors and thin bungee cords, I suspended a 120mm fan over the X58 chip's heatspreader. This made my system stable. I know that Gigabyte believes that the little heatspreader is more than enough cooling for the X58. I think they say that it will be stable up to 90C. This may be the case usually. But it may not be the case for every situation. I can only share with you my experience.

Are you up and running again now? You could use a very fine/clean make up brush dipped in thermal paste cleaning solution to clean the affected pins, then wait a few hours for it to evaporate

What solution should I use? I did put everything back together again. It is working fine now. But then again, it worked fine while the pins became damaged...

If its working fine and stable then i wouldn't mess, any alcohol based solution would remove thermal paste, could just need a bios tweak now if your not 100% stable

                      Thank you for the responses.

Two of the pins have heads that are slightly bent downward at the tip. But they are of the right height. they have not been bent laterally. I do not believe that i caused them to bend by installing the cpu. Rather, my guess is that the pins were bent due to excessive heat, enough to dull the gold finish off two pins and blacken one.

Since the cpu is already installed and is running at the same overclock which I prefer i will leave it alone for now.

By the way, where can I get a layout for the 1366 pins? :)

So it's all up and running smoothly now though right? All memory showing up in taskmanager too as available?

If so, great, I would leave it alone so no further damage is done.
