  • How to tell which BIOS version is backup BIOS?

    I have a EX58A-UD7 board. Currently using F8g BIOS.

How do I tell which BIOS version is the backup BIOS?

Is it possible to manually update the backup BIOS to the current version being used as the main BIOS? If so, how?

    Thank you.

Press F9 at main Bios screen.

To update back up bios. At POST when you would press "Del" to enter setup up press "ALT"+F12. It may take a couple try's.

      Thanks, Acebmxer.

I assume it is best to first load optimized defaults on the currently used BIOS so as not to save any problems to the backup. Correct?

Yes that is correct. And should always be done with any bios flash. Load optimized defaults before and after.

Do you know if the system automatically updates the backup BIOS at any time?

If not, does that mean that unless manually done as you described, my board's backup BIOS is the one that shipped with the board when it was new in 2009?

No the backup bios does not automatically get updated. You have to update the bios by pressing ALT+F12

What ever bios is on the Main bios should be on the Backup bios.

The bios that is shipped on day 1 of release is not the same bios that would be on the same board 1yr from now. If bios F1 was on the board on day 1 F6 might be on the board year later.

Re: How to tell which BIOS version is backup BIOS?

              Thanks, Acebmxer.

I understand that Gigabyte would be shipping updated BIOSes with new boards. But, I bought this UD7 when it was first released and have never manually updated the backup BIOS. I have updated the main BIOS many times, now using F8g.

But from what you said, it appears that my backup BIOS has never been updated and is probably still on F2. So, I will need to update the backup BIOS manually (Alt-F12 on boot).

I don't know why I always assumed that the backup BIOS got automatically updated from time to time, but I guess not.

Backup BIOS does get updated sometimes. When it does you see the update after a flash, right before DMI pool data update.
As was posted before, press F9 at main BIOS screen and see what is your backup BIOS.

Re: How to tell which BIOS version is backup BIOS?

I'm unclear as to what F9 key press is supposed to do. I did press F9 at the Gigabyte logo screen and saw a very brief "recovery" screen (maybe just for one second) but the boot up continued as normally. There was no screen giving any user options. After Windows loaded, I opened CPU-Z where the Mainboard screen still showed the F8g BIOS, which has been my current BIOS, with all BIOS settings as before.

I thought the F9 key press would identify the backup BIOS version and the ALT-F12 key press would load the backup BIOS. But now I'm not clear what F9 actually did.

You have to be IN the bios. Press "Delete" at post. Once in the bios at the main screen then press "F9" key

For the backing up the backup bios. It some times help to hold the "ALT" key while powering on the system and repeatedly press the "F12" key

I know that this is an old thread ... but on my GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 Motherboard BIOS, pressing F9 shows the system information ... but I only see the BIOS version (i.e., F12) but I do not see any Backup BIOS version ...

Can anyone clarify what I need to do to see the Backup BIOS version?

                      Thanks in advance?

Look at the date on the window that pops up when you press F9 while in BIOS. I'm pretty sure, but not 100% positive, that the date shown is the backup BIOS date.

Flash the backup BIOS to the same version as the main, then you will know for sure!

When I recently updated my EP45-UD3R for the first time in about 5 years upon restart there was a popup that the backup bios is being updated. I did not press any keys so it was automatic.
Was not aware that was to happen.'
So apparently my backup is also a modified bios that I did not want it to do that but have the backup be official in case of issues.
