  • UEFI problem with Asrock 880G pro3

Hello my favorite motherboard company.Have to say that i own asrock motherboards since 2004, never crashed or had any problems with them.
But recently i bought the Asrock 880G PRO3 , which runs great.
The only thing that bothers me is that cannot enter the UEFI BIOS setup if my VGA cable from the monitor is plugged in the vga card ( in onboard or PCI-E video, its the same). When i press the power button, i see the text "press F11 for boot menu, press F2 to enter SETUP" and when i press setup, on my screen i see the letters "AB" in the bottom right corner of the screen, my mouse and that is it.Rest of the screen is black. The system is frozen.I cannot move my mouse or do anything with the keyboard, I can only push the reset button to reset the PC.The only way i found to enter my UEFI Setup is this :
1.Unplug the VGA cable from the motherboard (the blue one which connects my Monitor with my graphics card, onboard or not), start the PC, press F2 rapidly for 5 seconds, plug back the VGA cable back in, and on my monitor i see the UEFI setup up and working.Other than that if i let the system boot without pressing F2, it boots normally to my windows7 desktop.
My monitor is 17'' Dell CRT.

Here is a list of things i have tried to solve the problem on my own:
1.Flashing the bios to p1.30 - no effect.
2.Testing with other monitors ( newer LCD models ) - same problem.
3.Tweaked and tested with all possible UEFI setting related to displays( primary graphics adapter, only PCI-E plugged in or only using only onboard VGA etc...) no effect.
    4.Reseting CMOS - no effect.
    5.Cursing - no effect.
    That's about it.
I will greatly appreciate the suport from you guys.
    Help?

Re: UEFI problem with Asrock 880G pro3

I also have this motherboard and have a similar story as
i also have had several earlier asrock motherboards and they worked
flawleesly, but not this one. My guess is that they have released the
UEFI bios prematurely so they have not ironed out the bugs yet..
I also have problem booting and other issues:
        1. if i have my usb hub connected, the mb won't boot at all,
as soon as i disconnect the power from the hub the mb boots,
after some googling i found that the mb probably tries to boot
from usb devices it shouldnt boot from, do u have usb hub in
        your monitor?
        2. if i have my usb ir-eye connected the mb boots but very slowly
and i cant get into the bios, so similar to 1.
        3. i can't get eSata to work

I just got this motherboard 1 week ago, probably i will find more issues,
but this is it so far. But apart from these issues the motherboard runs well
when up and running. I have emailed asrock about the issues but no response yet..

        /PJ

Re: UEFI problem with Asrock 880G pro3

I have this motherboard too. The Uefi bios page is almost black but when I move the mouse cursor it reveals parts of the page but it still looks messed up. And when I try to click at an Icon my cursor freezes. I also have the problen that since I have the new Board the stereoscopic 3d of my Radeon Hd 6870 dosn`t work anymore. I have already reinstalled my operating system on new formatted partition. and reinstalled everything but this changed nothing. I fear that this problrm mght be caused by the 880g pro3 because with my old mainboard I never had such problems. I really would like to be able to enter the bios so that I can see if something isn`t properly configured. Mrs Emily from Arock could you please also send me a beta-bios for my board. Many thanks in advance.

                    Same problem.
Can't access the BIOS with HDMI cable - I have to use VGA.
This is with a Samsung LNS3251D HDTV as monitor.
                    I sent a PM to
ASRock TSD - Emily asking for a BETA or updated BIOS.

This is the reply from ASRock support yesterday.
                      William;
Please check if your monnitor support 1920X1080 resolution @60Hz.
If you have a blank screen ,probalby your monitor does not support HMDI resolution from the motherboard.

                      ASRock America Support
                      This is my reply.
Yes it does support 1920X1080 resolution @60Hz.
It worked fine with my A785GXH/128M motherboard.
Others on various computer forums have had the same problem and were sent BIOS v1.31 from ASRock support.

                      Bill
Doesn't look like support will help.
Hoping to hear from ASRock TSD - Emily.

Asrock has released a new version of the bios - p1.40 yesterday (10/04/2011 - 04 october 2011).The beta BIOS fixed my problem , but still i will update to this version because i just dont like the "beta" of anything :).If everything is normal after updating i'm gonna post here to let others know that the problem is gone for sure.

Can you guys post in this thread about your results after updating? I'm just being curious if the new BIOS fixed your problems, so we can all enjoy our great motherboard :).

Re: UEFI problem with Asrock 880G pro3

Okay.I have updated to version p1.40 with Asrock Instant flash. But now there are a few new things happening to my PC.

1.When I start my PC I can no longer see any Full Screen Logo, or anything at all , just black screen (my monitor LED goes from orange to green , so that means it's receiving signal) and shortly after that i hear 5 short beeps from the onboard speaker followed by a normal high pitched beep (the one that we hear every time we start the pc, meaning its booting properly). After that its all normal, windows loading up.
                          I don't really know what's causing this.Any thoughts?

2.When i start up the pc (without seeing anything on the monitor) i know i must press F2 to enter UEFI BIOS setup, so i do that. After the beeps i mentioned above, i enter the UEFI BIOS Setup succssesfully.Problem is, screen resolution is 640x480 , 60Hz and the whole UEFI interface is not re sized properly for that resolution. If I use the keyboard to scroll down in menus i cannot see the last menus of the screen. The only way to see the whole UEFI menus and interface is to do everything with my mouse, because if I move it to the bottom for example, the screen follows the mouse.I'm glad that's working, otherwise I've had no way to see all the buttons and menus in the setup utility.

Except these two problems, after updating to p1.40 everything works as it should.
Am I satisfied ? Not really... but i can live with that...until new version comes out :P

                            ASRock giveth and ASRock taketh away;
Yes I can see the BIOS screen now but now I can no longer unlock cores 2 and 3.
Oh well, this is my media server so I don't really need a quad core anyway.

Much faster boot times - As kalin89 said, I used to be able to see the POST screen but now I have to start tapping the Delete key (or F2) immediately or it will boot right into Windows 7.
Also, my BIOS screens are at half size but moving the mouse up/down and right/left lets me see the rest.

Ey Bill, have you noticed any changes to your CPU 1 Fan speed?
Mine was always set to FULL ON and it was speeding up quite a lot (6000+RPM) when under load , and slowing down when not at load. That was before. But now even under load it's not passing 3500RPM.
Strange because my CPU is one of the hottest ones, going above 60 degrees C if not cooled properly. (Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition)
