  • X58A-UD3R Marvell controller not detecting any HDDs

Hey guys. I have the Gigabyte X58-UD3R trying to use HDDs on the notoriously problematic Marvell SATA3 6Gb/s ports.

My problem is different and worse from all previous ones I've seen however.

I installed Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) without any additional drivers, using one of the ICH10 ports.

If I plug a HDD into one of the marvell ports it is not detected in my BIOS or in OS

The OS did not even show a Marvell storage controller until after I went to install one (ver. 1.2.0.1003 from http://www.station-drivers.com/page/marvell.htm as Gigabyte does not provide a driver) at which point my Windows 7 64-Bit blue screened with an error showing mvs9xx which is the filename for the marvell driver.

Now it does show a Marvell storage controller in device manager but still not showing a HDD in BIOS or OS device manager or disk management

    BIOS settings are:
GSATA3 RAID Mode Control: Fw Mode
    SATA3 Firmware Selection: Auto

Another note is if I try to enter the "GSATA3 RAID Configuration" it doesn't load anything. If Gsata3 is set to IDE mode it freezes, if set to AHCI it holds for a few seconds without going anywhere then lets me move up or down on the same screen

BIOS was updated to new FG version from May this year<!-- No Linking-->

    Hello nottinmatterz_2day,

I noticed that you don't have the right marvell driver installed. There should be a marvell raid or AHCI controller installed. For instance I'm running 2 WD 1 Tb in raid0 on my SATA6 controller, you should see the Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller listed under Storage Controllers in the Device Manager. You have to install the Console driver first then the either the marvell raid or AHCI drivers second in windows. You can also find this in the owners manual and the drivers are on the drivers disc for your motherboard but get the latest drivers;- its always best.

As for the bios setup if your using AHCI for your setup you only have to set it to that no other action is needed, for a raid0 setup set it to raid then you can enter the raid setup screen and enter your options. You will not see a bios post for the marvell ports. When you boot back into windows install the drivers reboot go to control pannel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management - and partition/format the drives

I did not use the CD that came with the motherboard because I figured the newest driver would be best, maybe the one i downloaded only works with marvell standalone card?

But not showing the HDD in BIOS, they should always show in BIOS correct?

it is set to AHCI in bios but would not load the RAID setup from BIOS

Re: X58A-UD3R Marvell controller not detecting any HDDs

If your hdd's are setup in AHCI mode or Raid. They will not show up in the bios except for HDD boot order. The HDD's should show up in the AHCI rom when that loads or the Raid rom when that shows during boot up.

If you installed windows when the drives where on the intel ports and set to IDE mode and now moved then to the Marvell sata3 controler in AHCI mode. This will not work and most likly get a BSOD error. There are registry entry's you can try to modify but I think that only works if you instal in ide mode on 1 controller and switch modes on that same controller.

You may have to reinstall windows with the drives attached to the Marvell controller.

Do the drives get detected by the bios if they are plugged into the Marvell controller when set to ide mode?

Also make sure you are using the latest bios for your board and try to update the Marvell controllers firmware. (There is a option in the bios to Force firmware )

            Any luck with this?

You may want to read here http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...tml#post399973 and some other post from Pablo. As he had issues with marvell controller not detecting hdd's.

You may want PM Lsdmeasap about your issue and he could pass it along with Gigabyte support.

Re: X58A-UD3R Marvell controller not detecting any HDDs

              Thanks

It was not showing the HDD in HDD Boot order either

installed when set to RAID mode. I set marvell controller to IDE as well and still didn't detect the HDD. It was a HDD and not an SSD that i connected to the Marvell, I wasn't trying to load windows with it

I've heard so many problems with the marvell controller so I just disabled it and am using the 8 remaining ports.

EDIT: that bios listed for the UD7 i have UD3R, I think I'm content for now. If in the future I decide I could use more drives (all my ports full now) maybe there'll be an even newer BIOS and more problems worked out that I can try then to get these ports working

Yes I know the above I posted is about a different board and they are having issues with ssd being detected and not a hdd but still same sorta. Also this is why I say to contact Lsdmeasap as he already has the bios engineers working the problem out for the other guy with his issues. You could also contract Gigabyte support directly and tell them all the info and ask them to pass it along to the bios engineers and they might be able to issue a bios update with a fix for the Marvell controller.

But you are correct and the Marvell controller has had a lot of issues. You might be better off buying a PCIe raid card or something.

Yeah now I'm tried of it taking my time, i can wait until the next chipsets or intel sata 6gbs come out maybe get a core i9 or something

On a related note the onboard LAN stopped being recognized as well, in BIOS and in OS. sent gigabyte a ticket for this one
