  • Does Gigabyte have real PCI-E Gen 3 Support??

    Hi,

MSI is saying publicy that Gigabyte doesnt have genuine PCI-E gen 3.0 support on most of their motherboards. They are saying that only the G1 Sniper 2 board has true PCI-E 3.0 support, and the other 40 boards that say "Ready for Native PCIe Gen. 3." dont have the proper components to enable true PCI-E 3.0.

This issue is being reported around various websites, is Gigabyte going to put out a statement on the issue?

MSI made some slides to say that Gigabyte is being dishonest or at least mistaken:

Nothing to do with 2011 Wazza. MSI is refering to currently available socket 1155 boards that claim "Ready for Native PCIe 3.0" on the box, when in fact they have zero in the way of PCIe3.0 functionality, including the wrong rating of capacitors and resistors in the PCIe area.

Personally I believe it's probably another famous Gigabyte brain fart concering translating Taiwaneese to English. They're god damned crap at it. The phrase on the box may actually mean that the board is PCIe 3.0 cpmpatible, meaning that 3rd gen devices will work on those boards, but at 2.0 speeds (which aint much of a boast really but...).

Currently only the G1 Sniper 2 can genuinely push 32GB/s down its combined PCI lane capacity (16 lanes, potentially from Ivy Bridge CPU's)

My understanding is that even at the same rate gen 3 devices will deliver more data then gen 2.

Re: Does Gigabyte have real PCI-E Gen 3 Support??

Not sure what you mean Chike.

As it's a completely different standard in terms of transfer rate, yes, a n 8x 3.0 slot will deliver the same as a 16x 2.0/2.1 slot. However, this story stems from the fact that Gigabyte's wording on what standard their boards support can be interpreted as being incorrect.

While graphics cards won't need the kind of bandwidth that PCIe 3.0 can give for a long time to come, devices like PCIe SSD's will require more speed very very soon. It also means that less physical lanes will be needed to support current and futute implementations of SATA for example. 16x 3.o lanes will go a lot further than 16x 2.0/2.1 lanes assuming current generation tech. There will also be a much smoother transition when devices are commonly available that do need the speed.

Take the P55 chipset farse. If I want SLI on my board, I might as well forget about USB 3.0 and SATA 6G, as the fools at Intel thought it a clever idea to use Gen 1 PCIe onboard. More bandwidth is never a bad thing. It might not give any benefit now, but for the future as well as current storage enthusiasts, it's worthwhile rolling it out as soon as it's ready.

The guys at intel don't do mistakes, they plan on you upgrading.

SSDs will need 4GB/s soon? I doubt it.
Don't the P55 supports PCIe 2.0/2.1? How those should be effected by SLI? Seems like GB design not Intel fault.

Re: Does Gigabyte have real PCI-E Gen 3 Support??

There are PCIe SSD's that are currently capped by a 16x PCIe slot.

Just because you can't see a use for something, doesn't mean someone else can't.

P55 chipsets have 4 PCIe 1.0 lanes on the southbridge and the 16x lanes from the CPU. Intel deliberately used PCIe 1.0. This means that if you want Super Speed USB 3 and SATA 6G, you must be running a single card. With a single card installed, the board will re-route lanes from the PCIe 2.0 lanes on the CPU, dropping the GPU down to 8x, making the second PCIe slot unusable. In an SLI config, the options to use full speed SATA 6G and Super Speed USB 3 are disabled automatically. The only boards I'm aware of that dfon't have this limitation are the special hybrid boards made by ASRock which had a socket 1156 CPU socket but used a P67 chipset.

No storage enthusiast will be using a single SSD. With SSD's (consumer grade ones, nothing special) hitting 500MB/s, four in RAID would be possible due to there being plenty of available bandwidth. an external RAID card would be needed for a 4 way setup, but even the Intel controller would benefit. Intel could then replace all their Sata 3G with SATA 6G ports. The only reason they don't at the moment is that it's pointless because there isn't enough bandwidth available for it to make any sense.

Triple channel RAM is also completely pointless at the moment to most people. Quad SLI can be deemed pointless by some. At the end of the day, it's a two way street. Hardware is pushed not only by consumer demand and software but also by the interfaces available. Introducing a new, faster standard allows hardware manufacturers to push the tech further. Now is as god a time as any to introduce it. There's no exact day where at 12:00 midnight PCIe 3.0 will suddenly go from pointless to essential. It needs to be made available ahead of time. Components will grow to fit the new standard.

Our PC's aren't fast enough. Anyone who thinks theirs is is wrong. PC's have never been fast enough, and they never will be fast enough. Upgrades will be constant and never ending. If a PC was fast enough, you'd have it for life. Poeple evolve in their usage patterns, software evolves, people want to do "the new thing" on their machines. Rather than wait until hardware chokes an interface, why not introduce something that pro-sumers will be able to use now and that mainstream to enthusiast level guys will be glad of later on? Plus the early adopters will help iron out the bugs for when PCIE 3.0 becomes essential.

Any way, I digress. The issue at hand is that Gigabyte state U"Native PCIe 3.0" compatibility on boards that are PCIe 2.0/2.1 only. That's either dishonesty or a huge wording error.

Surely gigabyte will release z68/p/67 mb's that fully support pci-e3? I wouldnt expect current mb's to support it anyway, just like gigabytes uefi, don't forget software lags behind any CPU/hardware upgrade too, things could be a lot faster if software took advantage of all these multicores/hyperthreading

Re: Does Gigabyte have real PCI-E Gen 3 Support??

It's not a question of whether or not "he" knows.

It's front page news on Tweaktown. MSI have outed Gigabyte for it. They don't need an Ivy Bridge CPU. PCIe Gen 3 requires certain components to be rated differently such as capacitors, resistors etc. Without the correct rating, it's impossible for the board to be PCIe3.0 capable. The boards Gigabyte have labeled in the misleading manner contain caps and resistors set to PCIe 2.0 specs.

It's all in the link in post number 1. IMO, it's hugely misleading and down right decietful if intended deliberately. However, knowing Gigabyte and the pi55 poor Taiwaneese to English translations they use, I'm betting they meant to say "Compatible with PCIe 3.0 devices" as in backwards compatible. Now that's pretty obvious anyway, as PCIe 3.0 devices should (in all but rare circumstances) work fine (but slower) in a PCIe 2.0 capable board.

You can say "PCIe 3.0 ready" to be a mistake or translation error., but reading the link in post #9 there is no doubt of what they meant.
"as well as offer native support for PCI Express Gen. 3 technology, delivering maximum data bandwidth for future discrete graphics cards." cannot be a translation mistake of one word.
