  • GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 and G-Skill Sniper DRAM issue.

As a first time poster a quick greeting from New Zealand.

I've had this board a couple of months now and have slowly been upgrading my system. One of those upgrades was my DRAM where I purchased 2 sets of G-Skill Sniper F3-12800CL7D-8GBSR(DDR3-1600 PC3 12800 7-8-7-24-2N 1.6V)

The two kits are sequentially numbered and G-Skill say on their web site they will work on this board (I am aware that Gigabyte does not have it listed on the QVL)

The issue. When I run this ram up in XMP mode in either an 8GB config or a 16GB config - the timings go to 8-8-7-24 instead of 7-8-7-24. When I check the memory in any reporting software like CPU-Z/SiSoft etc...it always shows up as having XMP data of 7-8-7-24 but running as 8-8-7-24.

I can set the timings manually in 8 GB mode to 7-8-7-24 in any combination of sticks in either slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, and the timings will hold. If I set the timings manually in 16GB mode the system will not boot to windows until it cycles itself with an OC issue and then sets the memory to 11-11-11-28. If I set the timings manually to 8-8-7-24 in 16GB it boots fine.

I am aware that some other users of this board have had a similar issue with G-Skill Ram but not specifically the same modules as me.

All modules have been tested individually using Memtest for about 8 hours each and with no errors. My system runs just fine on 8-8-7-24 with 16GB on board and is as stable as - right up to 5.25 GHZ.

I have done all the necessary tweaks with voltage etc. with no luck. So really the issue for me is why would RAM that is carrying XMP timings of 7-8-7-24 boot up as 8-8-7-24 when utilising the XMP profile from within this board. Is it a board issue or is it a memory issue. I can't help but think it may be an issue of the board given the XMP profiling issue. I have tried BIOS F4, F8 and running F9C, same problem on all.

    Thoughts?

Can I get the Gigabyte rep to refer to this thread please, where the issue has been duplicated by G-Skill

What voltages have you tried with regarding dram and qpi/vtt? The reason its loosening timings is because qpi/vtt isn't enough so it finds the next best settings, raise qpi/vtt voltage one or two clicks more than what auto uses, might need more

You will have to contact GB support on their site.

I've tried all the way up to 1.30 QPI/VTT with no luck.

Simply put - with 16GB of memory installed on this board running in XMP mode - it will default to 8-8-7-24 timings - despite the timings being loaded in BIOS as 7-8-7-24. Set the timings to manual at 7-8-7-24 - the board simply won't boot. No matter how high the QPI or VCore or DRAM Voltage. Loosen the timings to 8-8-7-24 and it'll boot and be stable no problem at all with CPU @ 4.2GHz, VCore 1.200V the QPI/VTT @ 1.14 RAM 1.60V.

Could simply be a BIOS issue/incompatibility,it takes a while for bios's to catch up,it should've worked with rated timings whith a slight bump in voltages imo,you can email gigabyte directly stating the problems your having with that make/model of ram and they might forward you a custom BIOS to test

Good idea - I'm more than happy to test new BIOS's. You wouldn't happen to have an email addy to use? This is my first dealings with a Gigabyte board so don't have any experience with them other than for them to say that the RAM isn't on their QVL, which I must say helped immensley(sarcasm)

              Their response:

              Dear Chris ,

Thank you for your kindly mail. First of all, we do not find "F3-12800CL7D-8GBSR" in memory support list. Although there is similar one; please note it can still difference to the result of running. Since without XMP, the motherboard works fine, it seems motherboard itself is fine; we suggest you to use 1.5V JEDEC regulated modules or take your own risk to add voltage to support 1.6V modules.

Since it is easy to find memory compatiblity issue, and there are too many products in the market that we are not able to test all of them, we suggest you to refer to our memory support list or if you worry about hardware compatibility issue, we will suggest you to test before purchasing. If that is not possible, please then find a local store you can trust where can provide good after sale service to make sure you can get full support in the future.

8-8-7-24 timings are fine though as in you wont see any performance difference, they might argue that the memory isnt on their list so i dont know how you would get on

i only know gigabyte u.s/taiwan/and u.k websites,it should have help/contact and an email address you can email and ask them to test with your model ram and ask for a modified/custom bios

i think you have to fill in a form, was this the form you filled in when you got that reply?
