  • EP45-UD3P and IBM M1015 RAID card (as HBA)

    Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has successfully managed to get an IBM M1015 (eq. LSI 9240-8i) successfully running in the 2nd PCI-E x16 slot? I'm currently getting the following error when the system tries to boot to Windows.

    Code:
No physical memory is available at the location required for the Windows Boot Manager. The system can not continue.
I've tried switching off the Gigabyte SATA controller but that didn't help.

A google search revealed that there were compatibility issues between Gigabyte and LSI, and a mention of a fixed BIOS here. But haven't seen such a thing yet.

Any thoughts/fix would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

Re: EP45-UD3P and IBM M1015 RAID card (as HBA)

A web search using: "No physical memory is available at the location required for the Windows Boot Manager" (with quotes) showed that switching to a different PCI-E slot fixed the problem with an X58A-UD9 system.

Try swapping your raid card with your video card.
In the Advanced Bios Features, be sure to set Init Display First to [PEG2] with your video card in the lower (orange) PCI-E slot.

What settings are you using for the boot priority order?

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...beta-bios.html shows that F11d (http://oldforum.gigabyte.de/forumdow...1/ep45ud3p.zip) is an available beta bios for your motherboard. It might help.

      Hi profJim,

Thanks again for your assistance on another issue :-)

Couldn't use the 2nd PCI-E slot for the graphics card, as there are too many cables in the way and not enough ventilation for the card. The P182 case doesn't really leave much space towards the bottom edge of the board. I realise it was for testing but this can't be a permanent solution as the purpose of having this HBA card was to clear the top 3 ICH10R SATA ports so that I could fit a 2.5 slot graphics card.

What settings are you using for the boot priority order?
Boot device order is: CDROM -> USB-HDD -> Hard Disk

Hard Disk Boot Priority: WD Black 640GB -> RAID CARD -> Bootble Add-In Cards

Thanks, I noticed that but wasn't sure if it fixed anything. Will give it a try though as it appears to be my last resort.

I've never used Hard Disk Boot Priority settings.
Can you remove RAID CARD and Bootble Add-In Cards from the list or move them to the bottom of the list?

Would using sata cables with an angled connector help with video card clearance?

Well, F11d BIOS didn't fix the issue.

So as not to leave anything untried, re-arranged quite a few things and managed to fit the graphics card into the 2nd PCI-E x16 slot. Sadly, didn't fix the issue :-(

Re: EP45-UD3P and IBM M1015 RAID card (as HBA)

what is the built in intel controller set to?

If you are tring to run raid on the built in controller along with the new raid controller there could be not enough reserved ram space to store both raid roms in ram.

edit further reading this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-3ab632a9fa1b/

user was able to boot with built in controller set to raid and the raid card installed but with no hdds/ssds on the built in controller.

You may have to contact gigabyte support and maybe they can make a bios that will work for you to try.

There is no option there to remove anything, just to reorder. I listed it just in case, have never set anything there either.

I might try that actually - reverse right-angled SATA cables. Have seen them but they don't have locking mechanisms. Still, should be ok as the graphics card will be over them (the 2.5 slot one).

Interesting. Thanks for that, may give that a try.

Edit: Well, might set the onboard to IDE and put all devices to boot from the HBA. Except, I haven't got the drivers for the HBA installed in Windows yet. Not sure how to do so when the card can't even be in the system without getting that physical memory error?

Considering it, though as it's a P45 board, chances of getting a new BIOS for it from GB would be highly unlikely now I think.

                Nothing ventured, nothing gained ;)
Maybe they already have one available.
Given the popularity of their P45 boards, I'd be surprised if the wouldn't try to help out with a customized bios. If they don't help out with reasonable requests, they'll be pissing off a lot of owners who would probably buy other brands in the future. I reluctantly understand why my N650SLI-DS4 has no support, as it wasn't a big seller and had a very short life.

Thanks for the suggestions profJim. I think at present the reverse-angled SATA cables may be the cheapest way to go.

Suffice to say in my future build, Gigabyte won't be at the top of the list...

Just between you and me (and whoever reads this ), I see MSI or Asus in my Ivy Bridge future,
but I'm probably trading the devil I know for the devil I don't know (yet).

Good luck, let us know if the angled sata connectors work out OK.

                            Hi profJim,

Been a few months now but just wanted to let you know that I have just managed to resolve the issue with the IBM M1015 card and my GB board. The solution was to flash it to a HBA (non-RAID aka LSI 9210-8i), which is what I was after anyway. The instructions I used were these.

Still on my HD4870 but at least now have 3 slots free ;-) Now eyeing either a 7970 or 670

Hope the above helps anyone wanting to use the IBM M1015 as a HBA card on this GB board.

                            Cheers,
                            Alf
