So... I'm playing around with overclocks and when finding max bl****, I was able to get to 220, and playing with voltages, was able to get up to a 17x220 for 3.7ghz, stable. 180x21 was seeming to draw a lot more power from the wall - 465ish vs 505ish. Running 3dmark11 doesn't seem to produce much different results with my SLI rig, but reading Miahallen's guide, I think I might have missed how you are suppose to balance block and multiplier. The 17x220 is much cooler also when running intel burn test - with the same voltages as 21x180 - 74 vs 96'c, IIRC. I'm running a gigabyte p55a-ud4p rev. 1 board and i5-750. My impression from the guide that you are supposed to use 21 or 19 (odds are better?) as a multi and max the block as you can - but it seems like the lower bclock and higher multi might run cooler and be safer.. ??

also you will get better performance when overclocking the bclk vs the cpu multi. As overclocking the bclk you are also overclocking the ram.
Best bet is the use the highest bclk with the highest cpu multi while using the voltage and keep a eye on the temps.Main Rig

It's looking like it does like the higher bclock just judging from the temps and stability in running 3dmark11 and power draw from the wall being so much less (~40-50w). I was getting some occasional failures when going the high multiplier route. Back in the day on my 939 board, there was a equasion on how to balance the clock and multiplier out, but I guess the benchmark / stablity test is a fine way to go and with the save CMOS to BIOS option its so much easier to just try it out and see how it goes.
BTW - I was reading that enabling the dynamic voltage option was a good one (in the guide) - but the 'level 2' option isn't on my 15a bios. I figured that if it chose 1.2v for vCore, then I could assign up to 0.2 V for the dynamic voltage (I was conservative and went 0.15).Last edited by Ozark_750; 12-12-2011, 12:26 PM.Gigabyte P55a-ud4p rev.1

I seem to have narrowed it down to vcore + dynamic voltage issues. For example, doing max intelburn -
21x160 (stock oc) would run 266 watts
17x220 - 286 watts (vcore normal + 0.2 dynamic)
21x180 - 360-412 watts (!!) (vcore normal + .25 dynamic, 98'c)
21x180 - 280 watts (vcore normal + 0.05 dynamic, 70'c)
21x180 - 249 watts (normal +0.1 dynamic, failed stability)
So - I think I found my problem... of why the watts were fluctuating so much. The dynamic volts seemed to cause the psu to get unstable (judging from the 0.25 dynamic in the examle above). I was thinking it would be more efficient to peg the vcore at a nice 1.2v for regular dosing and then +0.1 for dynamic when under load, but that turned out to be unstable and needs more tuning. I know most people are using a 1.4vcore as a common oc range, but I'm working with a ceiling and trying to keep the total system back down in the sub 480 watt range. As far as the ram goes, I'm trying to keep it at 1.66v and within the 10% talked about in the guide.
Questions are - how do you balance bclk and multi (high bclk or multi - 180x21 or 220x17)? Should the oc have any effect on total watts used, or should it be just related to the vcore and dynamic (if used)? With vcore - should I be testing with auto/normal/fixed voltages?Gigabyte P55a-ud4p rev.1
